cobol >> Net Express 5.1 for .Net

by Pete Dashwood » Fri, 14 Jan 2011 22:29:15 GMT

I need a copy of Micro Focus Net Express for some investigation I'm doing.

The Personal Edition is fine as I'll only be compiling some small sample
programs and it is not for commercial use.

I downloaded a 150 MB copy of it from CNET but it doesn't install. The file
is called "NXP3251000157.exe".

The properties say it is a version 14.0.0.162 of a "setup launcher"
copyright Micro Focus 2006.

If you attempt to execute it, it doesn't start the setup program, it just
does nothing.

152MB of white elephant at the moment. :-)

Does anyone have any clues on this or know where I can get the Personal
Edition, or a version that actually installs?

I don't want to buy the software because I only need to look at it for a few
days.

I guess I might have to go to e-bay, but that would be a last resort...

Pete.

When I first installed MF 5.1 I ran in to trouble too. I had to go to
their re-download page (https://secure.microfocus.com/academic/
download_request.asp but that won't be of any use to you). However,
you might try emailing:

XXXX@XXXXX.COM "<< XXXX@XXXXX.COM >>

or

XXXX@XXXXX.COM

Alternatively find local contact information here:

Lots of pretty flags but I guess you'll have to pretend to be Aussie.

It looks as if MF have discontinued the free download (which worries
me as I have run in to 2 viruses in the last month).

Is there anything that I can help you with?

I have a CDfor MF Net Expres 3.0 University Edition and a CD for MF Personal
Cobol for Windows 3.1V1.1. Since these are not 5.1 for .Net, I assume that
you cannot use them, but I thought I would mention them just in case.

Thanks Alistair. There may be and I don't expect free help.

I'll respond privately.

If anyone else who has NE 5.1 might be interested in some support work
please contact me privately.

(No Doc, I am NOT trolling for resumes (I'm not in the pimping business) and
I'm not quoting rates because the nature of what needs to be done is too
tenuous at this stage. If I have some willing individuals, I'll be happy to
discuss with them what they can contribute and pay them accordingly. No
pimps, this is direct to PRIMA and will be a direct agreement with me
personally. I'll guarantee no-one gets ripped off.)

Thanks Charlie. There MIGHT be some benefit to that. I'm still trying to
locate 5.1 (without much success, I might add.) Bit Torrent claim to have
numerous copies of it for download but this is generally a crack site and I
don't go there unless there is absolutely no alternative.

I'll contact you privately if it looks like either of those could be of
help.

Cheers,

Pete.

I did find a copy in my archives along with an e-mail promising a
serial number and a work order number to follow by e-mail. Either I
have lost that e-mail or I never received that information.

Anyway, only partial success. I'm on 32 bit Vista. The installer spins
its wheels and appears to do nothing. However, I was able to launch it
by right clicking and selecting run as administrator. I was not
entirely happy with the outcome. 1) I was required to register name
and e-mail with some sort of DRM manager. 2) The installer indicated
that I need a copy of Visual Studio 2008 as a pre-requisite. That I do
not have, nor do I feel like trying a copy of VS 2008 Express which
should fail.

I hope that there were no nasties left behind by the failed
installation process.

Thanks for the comment.

I had a few others by private mail and it seems the install experience is
generally agreed to be miserable.

Nevertheless, a number of people have offered their assistance (Including 1
from Micro Soft, who confirmed that the University Edition has been
withdrawn), and I am grateful to all.

I believe my problem will be solved, and I expect to have it installed
within the next week or so.

Cheers,

Pete

7. Net Express 3.0 help

Hi COBOL people,

I'm in a COBOL class at school and we are using MF Net Express 3.0. I
bought the program off a buddy of mine who took the class last semester (The
orriginal, not some bootleg). Anyway, recently my registry got really
screwed up due to a virus that my little bro, bless his heart, downloaded.
I recoved to an earlier point and now the program won't work. Keeps telling
me "FATAL ERROR -- Cannot access message file" When ever I go to compile.
My teacher said it sounds like I'm missing specific registry entries. Well
I could reinstall and that should fix it, well turns out my roommate let one
of his buddies borrow my CD and also turns out that was a month ago, and no
one knows where it is. So What I'm getting at is, does anyone know which
registry entries would fix this, or does anyone have like a program update
that would fix it, anything. Or even if anyone has, or knows where to find,
the program downloadable online, any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve
