tex >> Times New Roman and AMSMath, txfonts, MikTex

by wilson » Tue, 27 Jul 2004 04:50:59 GMT

Hi,

I need to use Times New Roman for a conference, but the addition of
\usepackage{txfonts} (for which MikTex seemed to load the package)
messes up the equations in the file. Here's my preamble:

In MikTex:

\documentclass[12pt]{report}
\usepackage[dvips]{graphicx,color}
\usepackage{fancyhdr,acronym}
\usepackage{amsmath,amssymb}
\usepackage{txfonts}

The equations are mangled when I use txfonts. My main.log has lots of
warnings concerning this font, but I'm not sure how to fix things.
I've pasted main.log below. Much appreciation to anyone who can help
out!

As far as I remember, txfonts contains all amssymb symbols. You shouldn't load
both packages.

One addition to this is that the txfonts has very tight side-bearings,
which results in characters almost touching each other. Here's a
comparison with mathptmx from PSNFSS:

\documentclass{minimal}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{txfonts}
%% Just for showing the differences. Never do it in
%% a real document!
\DeclareMathAlphabet{\mathptmx} {OML}{ztmcm}{m}{it}
\begin{document}
\[
t^M, (x-t)^{n-k} t^k
\]
\[
\mathptmx{t^M, (x-t)^{n-k} t^k}
\]
\end{document}

The txfonts and pxfonts needs some touching up before you can use them in
math, but it's not certain that's ever going to happen.

It does work with amsmath, but it doesn't with amssymb (as it defines most [if
not all] symbols itself).

2. times new roman font

In the Acrobat Reader version 5 distributed for linux, there
were type 1 versions of the Times New Roman and Arial fonts.
Is it legal to use them in our (public) documents? If not,
is there a way to get some kind of licence? If the answer to
this second question is also negative, I presume the only
alternative would be to buy the fonts, isn't it?

4. Problem with dvips "couldn't find header file 8r.enc" when using times or txfonts

I recently updated my MikTex installation using the tool they provide,
and I believe that as a result something in dvips has broken.

Up until this point, I have been using txfonts without difficulty. The
stage to dvi still works, but when I attempt to use dvips I get the
message

couldn't find header file 8r.enc

and dvips produces no output. This only happens when I use
\usepackage{times} or \usepackage{txfonts}.  Omitting these (i.e. using
the default Compute Modern) results in perfectly successful PS output.

I have looked and see that I have the files 8r.enc in
\texmf\fonts\enc\dvips\fontname and \texmf\fonts\enc\dvips\psnfss, and
a file tx8r.enc in \texmf\fonts\map\dvips\txfonts.  I have remade the
filename data base.

Moral: never upgrade when you are in the middle of something, which I
am.

I'd be grateful for any advice. Thank you.

6. Times new roman vs. URW Nimbus Roman 9L?

Dear all,

my publisher wants a manuscript typeset in Times New Roman throughout.
I chose the mathptmx package under the assumption (as per various
documents I read) that it would indeed select Times New Roman as
default roman font. Instead, I found out (rather, the publisher did)
that the font selected is a Times clone, Nimbus Roman 9L from URW
(whereas Times New Roman is from Monotype, I believe). I was unable
to find out why the package uses the Times clone. Can anyone point me
to a source of information and to possible alternative packages, if
any at all, that would use Times New Roman? Is it a licensing issue? I
was under the assumption the Times New Roman is freely available.

Best,

Stefano

8. FYI: draftcopy - Error: Times-Roman not found.

Hi

This is just to provide a hit in case someone has the same problem as I
had, and tries an internet search.

I've set up the draftcopy package to provide a watermark, but there's a
problem when the resulting PostScript file is distilled.

By default, draftcopy uses Times-Roman, which is one of the base 35
fonts. However, our production route requies embedded fonts and does
not supply the base 35 fonts.

And so we get the error
     %%[ Error: Times-Roman not found. Font cannot be embedded. ]%%

The fix is to provide a font that can be found on the production route,
via code such as
    \RequirePackage{draftcopy}
    \def\draftcopy@Font{/TimesNewRomanPSMT}

I've copied Juergen Vollmer, the author of the package.
