8. Firewire network - XP to XP - extremely extremely extremely slow

I have a firewire network cable between a P4 3.0 dual channel Gigabyte
MB desktop and a 1.5 Pentium M Compaq Presario 2200 notebook.

The desktop has XP Pro, and the notebook XP Home with Service pack2.

The cable is a 4.5 metre 6 to 4 pin male.

The network is connected and shows 400 Mbs.

Files transfer each way OK.

The problem is that the transfer speed is 1% at best when viewed in
task manager.

I have disabled the firewalls, manually set the DNS, all make no
difference.

I am wondering if it could be service pack 2 (it has a poor track
record) or the cable or what else..........?

I have searched the net for answers without success.

Anyone struck this before?

Ideas?
