macintosh >> Alternatives to DAVE and ADmitMac foir DFS shares?

by bsommer » Wed, 17 May 2006 22:36:40 GMT

DAVE and ADmitMac from thursby.com are nice pieces of software, but
they only support Intel based Macs with their beta software. Usually,
I jump on betas, but the user of this particular PowerBook needs
something more stable. Does anyone have an alternative way of
connecting to Windows DFS share from Max OS X (10.4.6)?
Thanks!

In article < XXXX@XXXXX.COM >,

PowerBooks are PowerPC based, which means you can use the currently
shipping (non-beta) Dave and ADmitMac products. If your user has a
MacBook Pro then I know of no other options for connecting to DFS shares.

Hope this helps! bill

The current Thursby BETA program for DAVE 6.2 and ADmitMac 3.2 does support
both intel and PPC. The installers and software are all Universal Binary.

Alternatives to DAVE and ADmitMac foir DFS shares?

I have DFS shares on a W2003K server and Panther and Tiger Clients... I
connect by Command+k to:
smb://theservername/thesharename$

seems perfectly stable... note: macs do not understand the 'proper way'
of addressing a DFS share - ie //domainname/DFSsharename. Consequently,
not as fully implemented as you would wish but perfectly functional.

2. DFS - Access Denied on new DFS share

I setup a DFS root (AD based) on a Windows 2003 server.
My DCs are Windows 2000. I can access the DFS links as
Admin but no other users can access them. I
get "\\mycompany.com\dfsroot\dfslink is not accessible.
You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find
out if you have access permissions."

I can access the share through a normal windows share
(i.e. browse to it) but can't access it through the DFS
share.

6. DFS: Linking from one DFS link to another DFS link

I have a single DFS root namespace on a Windows 2000 member server. One of
my links is called Payment Processing and points to a Payment Processing
shared folder on our file and print server. My office is in Texas. We have
a second office in Oregon. There is Payment Processing folder on one of the
Oregon servers.

Here is what I am wanting to do but do not know if I can do it with DFS.
Under the Payment Processing link is a folder that I created called
Portland. I want our users here at my office in Texas to be able to click
on this Portland folder under the Payment Processing mapping and it redirect
them to the Payment Processing folder on our server in our Portland, Oregon
office.

I thought that this was possible with DFS. I read from the Windows 2000
Server Distributed Systems Guide where it says that "Linking from one DFS
link to another DFS link is possible only if the second link is in a
separate DFS namespace. For example, you cannot have
\\Server\DFS_root\DFS_link1\DFS_link2 unless DFS_link2 lies under another
DFS root."

I set this up but when I check the status of the link it gives me a red X.
Does anyone know if I can do this using DFS?

Hello All -

IF a windows securty principal is this:

any object that has an SID attached to it,. then does that make (really) any
object in active directory, the file system, services, dns records etc.
Security Principals?

I understand that user accounts, computer accounts, serivce accounts are
security principals but am i correct that "Any Object" is considered a
security principal if it has
an SID assigned to it?

Thank You,
