macintosh >> AFP File name length limitation

by dmlwZXI » Wed, 10 Nov 2004 01:39:02 GMT

When copying a file from MAC OS 10.2.8 or 10.3.5 to a 2003 file server
running Macintosh File Services we receive an error if the filename is longer
than 27 characters (not including the . extenstion).

If the file is transfered over SMB, or to another MAC, the 27 name length
limitation does not exist.

The error we receive is The file [filename] is too long or includes symbols
the disk can not display.

Has anyone heard of a file name length limitation on the Mac file services
for 2003?

Macintosh Files Services uses AFP (Apple File Protocol) 2.2 which has a 31
character file length limit. This limit exists on Classic Mac OS clients as
well. This same file length limit does not exist with the newer Mac OS X
clients which use the newer AFP 3.x. SMB clients or third party AFP
products using the newer AFP 3.x do not have this limitation.

2. File Manager file name max length?

Hi,
Is it possible to create files with names longer than 32 characters?

I'm getting 'Bad Filename' errors from the following calls with long names:

err  = ::FSMakeFSSpec(destFSSpec.vRefNum, nodeID, fileName, &clipSpec);
err = ::FSpCreate(&clipSpec, 'text', 'TEXT', 0);

It's possible in the Finder, so what's the problem?

Thanks

6. MAC OS X - Windows Server 2003: Length of file names

Hi

I work with a Mac OS X Client who is connected to a Windows Server 2003 via
AFP. I am programming on the Mac and copy the whole project (e.g. for
backup) to the Windows Server. Now I have the problem that I have file names
who have a length of 33 characters and more. I can't copy this files to the
server. There is a message, the file name in too long.
- Is there a limit for the length of file names on Mac OS X 10.3.9?
- If no why can't I copy the files?
- If yes can I change the configuration (Mac OS X, network, ...)?

I have another problem. The connection to the Windows server will be always
interrupted after a while if there is no traffic between the server and the
client. As i said I connect to the server via AFP and the TCP/IP number.
- Is that a known problem?
- What can I do?

Thanks for every help.

Hans

8. Macro length limitations in Word 2004

We have some Word 2003 for Windows macros that we are trying to run in Mac
Word 2004. (We are opening our Word 2003 files in Word 2004 and then running
the macros in them.) We are getting "procedure too long" error messages. If
we divide the macros into 2 macros and run them one at a time they run fine
in Mac Word 2004. This means, however, that what takes one operation in
Windows takes 2 operations on the Mac.

Is there anything to do to get around this?

Thanks,
Gene
