Hi i wonder if someone could provide me with some advice. Our school
runs a windows domain and 99.9% windows xp clients. We have just got
an emac running OS X (panther). As the kids are more literate with the
windows network we want to make using the mac as similar and easy as
possible.

I have managed to get the mac to log on to active directory so users
can use the same login name and password, however when i test the mac
with domain password and usernames i can log onto the mac but am
presented with a terminal and asked to log in again, i retype my user
credentials and i get a prompt where i can type various unix type
commands but i dont get the OS x GUI.

How can i make it so my users get right into the network and onto the
OS X desktop to work without having to log in twice and without seeing
the terminal. I would also like to make a link to the users home
folder on the 2k server appear on the desktop? Can this be done, any
help would be great. I am well aquainted with windows and some unix
but not mac.

The solutions I've seen from Apple involve setting up an OS X server to
perform this authentication. Apple has done a lot of work in this area and
it would be best confirm this is still the case with the latest OS X
release. http:www.apple.com

Another option is a third party solution like ADmitMac, which will handle
managed settings without
requiring an OS X server. http://www.admitmac.com .

With a Panther system (10.3) I can do the above without any problems,
did someone tighten down security on the Mac to disallow the creation of
home folders? A local home folder has to be created for the gui logon to
proceed, sounds like that that is where it is hanging. Problematic right
now without an OS X server to make the home folder on the Mac off of a
2k server. You can certainly have it mapped as a folder, not the home
folder

So how do you get the mac clients to mount a 'my documents' folder located on
a win2003 server upon login?

The office where I'm implementing SBS 2003 R2 has some MAC computers. I've 
dome some reading and testing and pretty much have gotten a MAC to work with 
SBS. I have one question though.

Why would I want to join the MAC to the Active Directory? By doing this WSUS 
complains since the MAC doesn't download any fixes. Also, since login scripts 
and policies don't work, I don't really see any reason why I should bother.

Can someone enlighten me as to the pros for joining a MAC to the SBS active 
directory?

Hello Everyone

I am having a problem with my network services. We are trying to deploy
a new policy where all of our techs have an Active Directory account
that will allow them admin-level access on our Macs. We have a group
set up on our AD server for our technicians, and the Macs are logging
in using the Directory Access program provided. However, the techs do
not have admin-level access even though the Directory Access program
has be configured to allow so. We cannot figure out what else to do,
and all the settings in DA have been verified. If it is any help, the
users under AD have no special privilages. HELP!
