macintosh >> .DS_Store

I have three Mac OSX workstations in the graphics dept in an otherwise
Microsoft shop. These guys litter all network shares with ".DS_Store"
files and "._filename" files. I have already tried the "defaults
write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true" command
but they have not stopped creating these files. Is there anything
else that should be done?

Thanks,
Peter.

Hi Peter!

You're obviously connecting via SMB if you're seeing the "._" files.
These are the resource forks of the files without the "._". While you
can delete them without losing data, Mac OS X will simply put them back
as you access the files.

You may want to try using Windows Server's File Services for Macintosh,
which will limit your file names to 31 characters, or you can look into
using a better SMB client such as Dave from http://www.thursby.com . This
SMB client does not create the "._" files. You can download a free trial
from their website.

Hope this helps! bill

Hi Peter,

This works for me; I have installed NYX http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11582

This utility allows the option to omit these files when saving on a network.

Note that ONYX can only be run from an user account with Admin rights.

Regards,

Albert

7. Question regarding DS_Store

8. .DS_Store

Anyone know where this file comes from? My Mac's disk
has these in lots and lots of directories. Most are exactly
6148 bytes, but others have all sorts of random sizes, the
biggest around 100KB. The total size is a few GB. Also,
they're mostly several years old, and many haven't been
accessed since the last backup that I did.

I tried removing them from a few of my personal directories,
where I don't think "system" apps should be putting files.
Nothing seems to have broken. I also grepped around and
couldn't find any references to them in any software that
I've written or installed.

I expect unrecognized files to appear in an app's directory,
but I get a bit suspicious when strange files start appearing
in my own directories without any clues about where they
came from or who is using them. And it clutters the disk.
