SQL Server >> SQL Mail Logging

by Gena Lakeman » Sat, 28 Aug 2004 00:55:40 GMT

I am trying to troubleshoot an issue with SQLMail messages
not being sent, but would like to check the SQL Mail Logs,
but I cannot find any. I thought that SQL Svr. would
write SQL Mail logs to c:\program files\Microsoft SQL
Server\Log\SQL Mail, but no such file exists.

Does anyone know how I can enable SQL mail logging on the
server, or where I can find logs specifically pointed at
SQL Mail?

Thanks.
Gena

SQLmail is integrated with SQL so it is logged in sqlerrorlog. Other logs
you can check:
Windows event log
sql agent log
sqlagent.out in the sql log directory

Shouldn't there exist a folder called c:\program files\Microsoft SQL
Server\Log\SQL Mail? I know that some SQL Mail logs get written to that
folder, but it does not exist. How do I force these actual mail logs here?
I've checked the other logs that you have mentioned that I have, and they are
not telling me the problem with the actual mail being routed (or in this case
not). I want to try to find an error so I can pinpoint the problem. What
happens is the SQL Server generates a message, and it just gets lost. The
mail server that should be picking it up is not, and there are no bounced
messages that I can find. I did have this working at one point, and the only
thing that happened was that the SQL Server and the mail server both were
bounced.

Thanks for your help.

2. SQL 2005 Maintenance Plan Log Mail

I am trying to get sql server 2005 to send a notification email after running
a maintenance plan. I have database mail setup and running. It will send
test messages just fine.
In my maintenance plan I click on the logging button - check the box to
"send report to an email recipient" and select an agent operator from the
list - me.

In the properties for the sql server agent I have gone to the Alert System
section and checked the box to "Enable Mail profile" told it use "Database
Mail" for the mail system and selected the mail profile of the account used
for sql server from the drop down list "mail profile"

After doing all this I restarted the sql server agent. No luck. I do not
get any errors in the error logs and the log tells me that the maintenance
job is successfull.

What am I missing - some other thing that needs to be configured?

thanks

4. SQL Mail and SQL Agent Mail @!~$%!%#^$%&^#&#%

I have been reading everything i can find regarding sql mail and sql
agent mail.

We have a win2k server, sql 2000 and NO, NO, NO exchange server(all up
to date on service packs).

I have tried repeatadly for days to make this work, and have had no
luck so far.

1. I have a valid profile that tests fine in sql agent and via sql
mail test buttons.

2. I have logged in to the box under that new domain account to
install outlook and configure all the remaining options.

3. I have set both the mssqlserver service and the sqlserveragent
service to run under the domain account that coincides with our pop3
email server, and restarted both of them.

4. I have installed outlook 2002, and I can send and receive emails
just fine from our sql server.

5. As soon as I try to test an email from within a job, the test
fails.

All I wanted to do was just be notified if a job fails. The amount of
time lost on what should have been a 30 minute project is
unbelievable!!!

If anyone has some suggestions, other than the obvious, please let me
know.

Thanks,
Dave

8. SQL Mail using client other than Outlook Full Version / SQL Mail using outlook express

Has anyone successfully set up SQL mail with Outlook express or another
free, 'thin' email client? We've only been able to use the full version of
outlook and some of our customers do not use outlook and are wanting a
'thinner' alternative. Does anyone know of any alternatives / succesfully
implemented them? Is SQL Agent mail a way to do this or can you get around
having an email client w/ sql agent mail (as oppsed to SQL Mail)

Thanks Much in advance,
