SQL Server >> MS search service problems

by jj » Wed, 15 Sep 2004 23:24:27 GMT

I have a SQL 2000 sp3a (8.00.818) server running on W2K3 that cannot run the
MS Search service. The executable is present but when I checked for the
catalogs, the "Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\FTDATA" folder was
empty. I have one other SQL server with the same exact problem. Any ideas on
how this might have happened?

More importantly how do I reinstall MS Search without reinstalling SQL
server entirely?

TIA!!!
jj

MSSearch lives in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\MSSearch\Bin

To verify it is working issue a net start mssearch from the command prompt
and see what you get.

I suspect that it is not installed.

Actually the directory is C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSSearch\Bin.
When I try a netstart I get: "System error 3, the system cannot find the
path specified."

So how do I reinstall it?

I think the more important question is how did this directory get whacked.
What else has been whacked?

To reinstall MSSearch or SQL FTS follow these directions:

You might have to look in this key as well

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL
Server\InstanceName\Tracking

2. MS Search service not working

Hello,
I have not been able to start the MS Search service on a W2K3 SQL 2000 box
since I installed it. I have reinstalled the Full Text component multiple
times.

The problem seems to be that somehow the MS Search service is looking for
files on a network drive instead of on the local drive. In the service
itself the "Path to executable" lists this: "H:\Program Files\Common
Files\System\MSSearch\Bin\mssearch.exe". This is my personal home folder.

How can I switch this path?

Thanks
