vbscript >> Software install Script ?'s

by WW9zdE5ldFNvbHV0aW9ucw » Sun, 06 Aug 2006 11:15:02 GMT

I am trying to figure out an install script for a print management software.
I have the .msi on a share, \\Server\Install, with proper permissions set. I
have no clue as to how to make a script that will run the install. So PLEASE
HELP! The software needs to have attributes set when it is ran. The vender
is NOT helpful so I turn to the trusted M$ community.

So far, I have
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dim objShell

Set objShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

objShell.Run msiexec /i "\\Server\Installs\Equitrac Office Client.msi"
EQCASNAME = "PRINTSERVER"
ADDLOCAL= ommon,ClientBilling,WindowsPrinting,en/q

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The program needs to know the EQCASNAME = " PRINTSERVER", and the next line:

ADDLOCAL ="Common,ClienBilling,WindowsPrinting,en" /q

Tells the program what parts of the program to install. Running this scrip
I get an error, on Char 72, (the E on EQCASNAME) Error, Expected end of
statement.

Hi,

Try this,

Dim objShell,strCmd
Set objShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
strCmd="msiexec /i ""Equitrac Office Client.msi""
EQCASNAME=""EQU_CAS_SRV""
ADDLOCAL=""Common,ClientBilling,CostPreview,WindowsPrinting,en"" /q"
objShell.Run strCmd

Babu VT,
You must be runing the Equitrac program too. If I try the Script as typed
it errors on line 3 char 65 (right after the very last "). If I put it all
on one line strCmd through /q" it looks like is will run, just Equitrac will
not install? When I run it I get a new msiexec in the computer processes,
but no Equitrac folder in the program files folder. I did chage the msiexec
line to:

strCmd="msiexec /i ""\\server\installs\Equitrac Office Client.msi""
EQCASNAME="Printserver""ADDLOCAL=""Comon,ClientBilling,WindowsPrinting,en""
/q"

All on one line.

Hi,

You are right all that should be in one line..The line wrap in the
newsreader messed it up...
Were you able to run ok now?

gh, for the love of God. I didn't see that you changed it from Equitrac
Express Client to Equitrac Office Client! I saw the different options, but
no wonder why I could not get it to run. I was calling Equtirac Office
Client.msi, not Equitrac Express Client.msi!

Thanks for all your help!

6. software installation GPO versus vbscript logon script GPO install via WMI

I just want to verify if my understanding is correct. Right now I have
the basics working - for example I have created a GPO to install an
ActivePerl MSI. With this approach the policy will be "smart" enough not
to try to install ActivePerl every single time.

Now, the other way I've tried is this - make a GPO that runs a logon
script. In this case it happens to be a vbscript that installs a MSI via
WMI. So for this approach, the downside is it will install no matter
what - the logic that checks if it already exists doesn't come into
play. Do I understand this correctly?

I guess the biggest worry is slowing down logon times if you have too
many of these WMI MSI installations going on -- then again I could just
let the WMI MSI GPO stay until I know that software is installed on
every machine.

Am I making sense?
