Microsoft Office Publisher >> Can't open P2002 files in P2000 -- and I've "saved down"

by Karen Sigel » Tue, 07 Oct 2003 04:03:44 GMT

I have a Publisher 2002 file from home that won't open in
P2000 at work. I've saved it as P2000 and as P98, but am
still getting the "can't open files from a different
version" message. I'm using "pack and go" and selecting
the "take to another computer" option.

Thanks-
Karen

After managing to set up OE-QuoteFix on his new PC, Ed reads a message

Pack and Go cannot be used in conjunction with the Save Down feature.

"In conjunction with..." I'm not sure that's what I'm
doing, but if it is, maybe that's why I'm having trouble.
First, I save down to a separate folder, then I open that
(P2000) file and pack it to go. Is this what you meant I
can't do, and/or, is this why I'm not able to open the
files?

Thanks

If you use Pack and Go after saving to Publisher 2000 format, it will save
as Publisher 2002 format.
You cannot save a Publisher 2000 file from Publisher 2002 using Pack and Go

Because when I look at the file that I converted, Explorer
says it's P2000, just like it should be -- but maybe
that's because I only have P200 on this machine?

Yep. Windows just reads the name associated with that extension from the
registry - it doesn't investigate the file to find out what program created
it.

Hi,

I am having problems opening a file sent to me by someone using Publisher
2003. I have Publisher 2000. She saved to the 2000 format, but it says that I
cannot open files from a different version. The document shows up in the
preview area, but will not open. She even tried to save it to the 98 format,
but it still will not open.

Any ideas?

I do hope someone can help me here, I have been using publisher for 3 years
now and once i figured it out I have had no trouble........until now!!!
Suddenly, I am not able to bring my files down from the website to edit
anything. I keep getting "website is not available" or "publisher can not
open files". These file were built in publisher!!! I have no idea what is
happening and I am getting EXTREMELY frustrated. I spoke with my webhosting
company (hostcentric -- it is shared webhosting) and they tell me all the
settings are correct and there is no reason for this to just have begun
happening and suggested that I ask someone from Microsoft or someone who
knows Publisher better.
