Microsoft Office Publisher >> Banner Problems

by Kevin Fitz-Gerald » Wed, 01 Oct 2003 04:02:33 GMT

NOTE: This is the first time I have ever been to this newsgroup.

This is the first time I have tried to print a banner. It is 8.5" high x 5'
long. Two problems; #1: no matter what I do, I cannot get a colored
background to print. #2: I cannot get the individual tiles to line up
correctly. They either leave gaps in between tiles, or they duplicate too
much between tiles. I just want to trim the non-image parts on each end
with a paper cutter, and have the text and images line up. Any help
appreciated.

Regards,
Kevin

Kevin, we don't hold it against you for this being your first time.
Good to see somebody that is polite and gracious.

What version of Windows and Publisher are you using?

What brand and model of printer are you using?

Have you checked your printer manufacturers website to see if they have an
updated printer driver?

Banner Problems

Kevin Bill and Melinda Gates are getting old and slack on peddling the
generator to keep the news servers going, and hence they have been seriously
playing up this last week. Their kids are only interested in playing
computer games and have no interest in the business. Consequently messages
have been appearing, disappearing and reappearing randomly.

Your problem will either be a setting problem in your Page Setup in
Publisher or your printer settings. If those are definitely correct, then
it will guaranteed be a problem of your printer driver. Epson are like HP
they fix nothing and are not interested in their customers. Reason why both
have dropped such significantly in market share. Publisher 2002 with proper
printer drivers has no known issues printing out banners.

Banner Problems

After managing to set up OE-QuoteFix on his new PC, Ed reads a message
from Kevin Fitz-Gerald < XXXX@XXXXX.COM >...
I would suggest using coloured paper - it is much simpler and cheaper.

There is no such thing as "too much" duplication between tiles, IMHO
Sticking together banners and other large-format tiled publications is a
tricky job, but can be very rewarding if done well.
First, trim only one edge of the paper (for banners, two or more for other
large-format publications). Trim the right edge of every sheet for best
results - you may want to also trim the left edge of the first. I suggest
using an industry-standard paper cutter for this. It doesn't matter if you
trim a little bit too far, Publisher's margin allows for this - but don't
leave any white space, as it will split your banner.
Now, line up the first two sheets. Make sure you can get them to match
perfectly - fiddle around with the sheets until you can get a good line-up.
Now, you need to stick these down. I suggest using Pritt Stick or similar
for this - lift up the sheet, glue the top side (the side that has had the
margin trimmed - we don't want the glue to show on the front), and place it
down - using the practise you had earlier at getting the page to line up.
Now turn the paper over and stick Sellotape of some kind over the join on
the back. I have not had particular success sticking the front with tape -
it has always looked bad - but you may get a good finish using 3M's Magic
Tape.
Using Tape as well as glue means that it is very difficult to fall apart -
but the glue means you can be looking at the banner while you are sticking
to get the perfect line-up, without having tape showing on the front.
Now repeat this for each consecutive sheet.
If you have done a miraculously good job, you will end up with no jagged
edges along the top or bottom of the banner. But because this is rare, it
is always a good idea to run along the top of the banner with a pair of
scissors to get rid of the corners.
