wireless >> PC 2002 WLAN error message in POP3 mode

by Hank » Sat, 04 Oct 2003 23:59:06 GMT

I can receive my email traffic on my iPAQ using POP3 and
earthlink.net. However I cannot send new messages or
replies using Outlook. I receive an error message that
states that the recipient is an "invalid message
recipient" and "message could not be delivered to an
invalid message recipient".
I can send emailusing hotmail and yahoo on the same iPAQ.

I have tried every imaginable configuration. Is there a
box I should have checked or not checked in PC 2002
Outlook?
It looks like the system is trying to check the contact
address and is unable to make the connection in Outlook
contacts. What configuration needs to be used.

See below for info from the Earthlink suppport web pages. Earthlink
requires authentication on their SMTP server... make sure you have that
option checked to login to SMTP. If you're not connecting to the internet
via Earthlink (i.e. using a public WiFi, work network, etc.) you need to
configure for smtpauth.earthlink.net.

SMTP Server: smtp.earthlink.net (connected via Earthlink)
SMTP Server: smtpauth.earthlink.net (via non Earlink connection)
SMTP Authentication Username: Your Email Address
SMTP Authentication Password: Your Email Password

I had the same problem, but what was actually happening is the
PocketPC was timing out when attempting to download the few hundred or
so folders that were in my home directory. I read a few threads about
recompiling UW-IMAP to use another default mail folder other than the
root of the home directory. I'm not that comfortable with compiling
yet... but I'm getting there!

Instead, I created another account on my Linux server (running
Mandrake 9.1), and did not give the account a shell or a home
directory:

useradd -s /dev/null -d /dev/null -p password ppcuser

On my box, my mail spool was at /var/mail/. In that directory, I
deleted the file called ppcuser since I don't really want the "real"
ppcuser email. Also in this directory was the filename of my regular
email account, called 'master'. I created a symbolic link to master,
and called it ppcuser:

ln -s master ppcuser

I then made sure that appropriate permissions were added to allow
ppcuser to read and write to the 'master' mail file. In my case, this
was accomplished simply by adding ppcuser into the 'mail' group. Your
config may vary.

When the PocketPC now logs into the IMAP server as ppcuser, it
actually pulls the email from the file called 'master' instead. Links
totally rock.

All the PocketPC sees is the Inbox, and that's it. No hundred folder
downloading. I've yet to have a need to see my sent messages and
drafts folder from my PocketPC, so I have not attempted to link those
up yet.

I'm really surprised that the Inbox on the PocketPC doesn't allow the
user to specify a mail folder explicitly. In the meantime, this has
been a speedy workaround.

By the way, just for the heck of it, I also did a hard link instead of
a soft link just to see what would happen. Everything appeared normal
until Outlook Express and the PocketPC tried logging into the account
at the same time. I got all sorts of errors. So the moral of the story
is keep it soft :)

Help!

This is a cry for help to all you good folks with some time on your

it and my Toshiba's screen says a winsock error had occured (Error %d).

Any clues and suggestions?

Thanks.
