wireless >> Server Administration with PDA

Hi,

I am thinking of getting the IPAQ 5550 with a GPS / GPRS wireless card from
our Cell phone company around here.

The goal of this PDA will be to help manage some of our servers remotely.

I will use SQL CE, and terminal services.

I also want to receive all my email through this device.

Am I dreaming or this is possible without being frustrated?

Anyone out there that is doing what I am talking about? Do you like it? Is
this working?

Steve

I do this all the time with my 5555 and Sprint cf card. Just the other day
I was in class and I was able to vpn into both my network locations and
update all the servers. It also worked out well cause we talked about
remote administration in class too. I love the combination but I would love
it more if sprint had a bluetooth phone. Since you're using gprs you'll
have that great option. I also do alot of e-mail with my 5555 and exchange
server. My new job is dragging their feet on getting me a laptop but that's
ok, I can vpn into there too and get my e-mail, browse shares, print and
just about everything I can do with my laptop(if I ever get it). Anyhow it
works great for me, I guess as with all things YMMV but I have to say that I
love it.

Great!

Although with a 56k sprint card, is the terminal service client works well,
is it slow, or acceptable?

Would Bluetooth be faster, or why do you seem to want a bluetooth device
instead?

With my sprint card I get speeds in excess of 80k so terminal services works
great. I believe gprs is limited to 56k right now but I've heard that it
works well. I rather have a bluetooth phone so I can ditch the sleeve on my
ipaq and just use bluetooth phone to make the data connection over my phone.
Either way it's nice to be able to do what I need wherever I am.

How fast is bluetooth?

I will buy a new bluetooth cell phone, and an IPAQ. I am debating a PC card
at 56K. I like your suggestion about ditching the sleeve.

Will I get 56k witht bluetooth and my cell phone?

i,

I use a h2210 with a SiemensS55 both connect via Bluetooth and work great.
For now the speed is only 56k but you can do eveyrthing I used to do with a
modem card but without the wires. I never have to take my S55 out of my
pocket. I listen to the radio and download my emails and more all at the
same time and it works fine.

2. Network administration

I'm a network admin on a system with over 800 users, and I am quite often
required to be 'out of the office' and running about the building. I
thought perhaps if I purchased a Pocket PC with wireless and an
administration toolkit I could easily reset passwords and create new user
accounts or edit GPOs on the go. But I can not seem to find an admin tool
kit for any of the windows mobile operating systems and so have thus far not
bought a pocket PC. Is such a 'tool kit' out there yet? Is it being
developed? Is the Adminpak that was created for use with XP compatible with
any of the Mobile O/Ses? What I want to do is outlined in the following
scenario: I'm walking down the hall on my way to service a PC, and a user
stops me to tell me they need their password reset, I pull out my pocket PC,
log in, reset the user's password, and I'm on my way, without having to stop
and go back to my office or find an available workstation.

4. Extending Remote Wipe beyond Mobile Administration Web Tool

Hello,

My company is a Microsoft partner and provides Exchange Server 2003 hosting
services for clients. We've set a limit of one thousand mailboxes per server
but since it's shared, more than one client can be hosted in the same
server.

What we would like to offer now is the Remote Wipe feature but since one
client must not see or access the other client's devices, I believe that the
Mobile Administration Web Tool does not suit us. Having said that, we were
looking for alternatives and came up with the idea of creating a simple user
interface using ASP.NET for each client. My question is: is there any API
available either in the Windows Mobile 5 SDK or in the Exchange 2003 SDK
that developers can use to extend and call the Remote Wipe feature?

I thank you in advance for the help. Regards,

Carlos

8. Controlling what is synchronised through Outlook between PDA and Exchange Server

Hi, I am thinking of getting a PocketPC / Windows Mobile device but the
following feature to control what is synchronised between the PDA and
the Exchange server is very important to me.

Is it possible to "tag" calender entries on Outlook Mobile as either
"Personal" or "Business"? So that when I enter a new appointment in
either Outlook on the PC or Outlook Mobile only the appointments tagged
"Business" are synchronised between the Exchange Server and the mobile
device. All the "personal" appointments entered on the PDA remain on
the PDA?

Can Pocket Outlook sync the calender with the "home" Exchange Server
over the "phone channel" rather than "through" the PC?

Thanks
