Pocket PC Networking >> Wake up mobile device from suspend on incoming GPRS data packet

by RGltaQ » Mon, 28 Nov 2005 09:40:02 GMT

Hi all,

I am developing an application that will communicate with a server over the
GPRS data network. Part of our requirements is the application to be able to
respond on an incoming data packet from the server over GPRS even when the
device is in auto-suspend mode. We know that this is possible when there is
an incoming voice call or sms message but we haven't figured out if it is
possible for data packets.

I am trying to make the application device independent and without going
into the details of the hardware I like to ask if the Operating System (WM03,
WM5.0) capable of doing something like that. Will the device be able to wake
up from suspend when there is an incoming data packet?

3. Mysterious incoming net packets keep waking up systems

I have three offices where there's a server and a number of stations
and all are set to go to standby, but to be able to be awakened if I
use RDP to connect for remote admin. But in the one office the systems
wake up a few seconds after going to sleep. I've narrowed it down to
something coming in from the internet, apparently with packets capable
of waking the systems up. In the network card settings there's a
selection for it can be woken by the "magic" frame or the "wake up"
frame. I forget which, but one type is apparently what RDP triggers.
If I turn off that kind of wake up the system stays in standby but
then I can't wake it remotely.

I have a nice router and switch which can probably tell me more than I
know how to use, but there is a small, steady stream of unicast
packets coming in from the internet and they are apparently the
culprit. I don't know how normal this is, if it's a remnant of someone
having had a virus, if it's a remnant of some file sharing software
(which I take off). I would appreciate any insight as to how to deal
with this.

Thanks,
Tom

5. Unwanted wake ups

My Axim PocketPC seems to be waking up for 'no reason.'
I was driving with my PDA in a car mount and I noticed that
the PDA turned on about 5 or 6 times during the 40 minute commute.

How can I figure out what's waking up the PDA?

Thanks. Please POST reply.

7. iPaq HW6510 w/ Windows Mobile regularly "wakes" to use GPRS

Hi,

Recently my iPaq has started to wake itself and try to use GPRS. After
around 5-10 seconds it gives up trying to connect, but of course the
iPaq remains on until going back to sleep. Which is a real pain as when
it's in my pocket and awake, it's too easy to press buttons, make calls
etc.

Anyone know how I can find out what's causing the wakeup? What's trying
to use the GPRS? I've looked everywhere I can think of but nothing's
obvious.

Any help appreciated.

Steve.
