ActiveSync (Pocket PC) >> bluetooth XP SP2 Cannot Set BT COM port

by Roland Rehmnert » Wed, 06 Oct 2004 16:47:17 GMT

Hello
I have recently updated my XP with Service Pack 2. After reinializing I have
can not change Active Sync Connection. I want that Async should communcate
with a specific Bluetooth comport. The connection manager of ASync only
shows standard COM ports (e.g. 1 and 3) which all are configured com ports
of my laptop, but not the incomming ports from the PDA. I can see them in
Device Manager, etc.

Before SP2 I had a little of that problem, but that time I could unpair the
device and then repair it. After the work the connection mananger was able
to see the new configured comport.
N.B. Something goes unexpectabley when I try to establish a Async link from
the PDA. The software seems to work properly to establish a connection. The
messages tells about a success and I have a established connection, which I
can monitor. It seems that it found a old uninstalled comport or something
in the "behind". Hardware only tells me about the 4 I have created.

Using widcomm software and DLINK DBT-120 USB Bluetooth adapter.

my PDA is working perfectly against another computer (W2K pro).

ActiveSync (Pocket PC) >> bluetooth XP SP2 Cannot Set BT COM port

Hi Roland,

The important point you need to consider is the virtual COM port number that
the device gets assigned. ActiveSync supports only 1 to 9 so if your device
gets a higher then COM 9, then refer to the second link to uninstall old COM
ports and re-assign the COM port number in the Device Manager.

I hope this information helps solve your problem.

A good remark indeed but it does not work for me.
I can not change the COM port because the Widcomm driver has left out the
that tab in the property page of my bad ComPort.

Also I have found out the the old default Microsoft Bluetooth driver has
occupied a tremendious amount of Com ports. This seems to be left out from
when the WidComm bt driver was installed.
Do anybody knows what I can remove in the reg. To remove files which are
still "in use" can be dangerous in away. E.g RFCOMM Protocol TDI and
Enumeration of BT dev.s. e.g. HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\BTHENUM
and servises as well...

bluetooth XP SP2 Cannot Set BT COM port

by Roland Rehmnert » Thu, 07 Oct 2004 06:57:18 GMT

est Raj Pillai..
I do understand your point. It is very good when it works. But I can not
reassign to any other number than to that number it was assigned in the
first place. I uninstall the BT stack and test it with the default driver
in XPSP2. I was assigned even higher numbers than was used but the
uninstalled driver. Reinstallation of the correct driver WidComm for DBT120
restablish the com port settings to the previous settings, but still I can
not change the port number in the BT property sheets. Nor I can do in
DeviceManager Advanced property sheet, as shown in you example. However
COM1 give the whole list of COM alternatives (255). A serie of them COM3 to
COM18 (my case) there is a remark string after the COMxx. e.g. COM9(in use).

I beleive that the system ReInstall old ComPorts of the default driver so
the system can find them or is not available because there exist no proper
driver from them..
I want to find a solution to reinstall them.. Do you know how or do anybody
else know. It is a little bit strange for me..

I will see what I will do.. To understand the registery and the WidComm
software is not an easy task. On my 2000pro BT and ActiveSync work without
any problem. However with less numbers of services.. I will continue to
search for help...

Thanks Roland

bluetooth XP SP2 Cannot Set BT COM port

by Roland Rehmnert » Thu, 07 Oct 2004 17:12:53 GMT

Well Well
Now I have fixed it.
I cleared a settings in the registry
a.. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\COM Name Arbiter
COMdb key is a bitmask of which 256 com ports are available (8 ports per
byte). Set to 3 to reserve com1 and com2 (i.e 0F in my case).

This made my Widcomm software to add bt enabled port starting with COM5. I
reinstall the driver for that particular Comport in the System->Hardware
Drivers->Com, even if the property explicitly told the right driver.
Restart of the machine was needed. Then Connection property of ActiveSync
found the port. I also found the new service on my PDA but I HAD to select
the old ActiveSync service which still had COM22 in its settings, instead of
the new one. I do not see the differernces in the registry nor elsewhere,
but it established the connection. with that original service. If somebody
can present an explaining URL about virtual COMs and BT for me, you are
wellcomed.

Now I will reinstall all software based on previous drivers. Some software
reserves comports, some does not run efter SP2. But it does not affect XP
nor Widcomm drivers.

Gosh. This is nothing for normal computer loving people, But it works after
all.
Causion: Do not uninstall a com port driver. you will not be able to
reinstall it unless you clear the registry settings shown above

Hi,

(using ActiveSync 3.7.1)

I'm having big problems using my 3Com USB Bluetooth adapter with my
pocketpc/active sync.

In my 3Com Bluetooth Connection Manager, my PocketPC is listed to use
Com Port 15, but ActiveSync only shows Comport 1 & 2.

If I go to Computer administration, I have Com 1, 2, 15, 16, 17 and 18
listed.

How come I can't see Com Port 15 in ActiveSync Connection Settings???

Thanks in advance!!!!!!

3. iPaq 3970, ActiveSync, BT, XP SP2

Hi,

I know from Googling, that this question has been asked many times, but I
haven't been able to find anything with exactly my problem!

I'm running XP Pro SP2 with a Belkin BT USB interface and am attempted to
get bluetooth activesync working.

Control pannel / Bluetooth shows me that I have two bluetooth com ports.
COM3, which is outgoing and COM4 which is incoming. However whatever I do I
cannot get the iPaq 3970 to sync with the PC over BT.

BT on each device can see the other deivce, and a partnership has been
created, *however* in the iPaq BT manager, when I view the "actions" menu,
it does not appear that my PC has any BT services and when I start
activesync from the iPaq, I get the message "Device xxx has no serial port
services available".

Help! :-)

7. TomTom blocking BT COM port

Hi all,

does anyone have problems with the latest TomTom GPS dirver (2.08)
blocking the COM port with a Bluetooth GPS? On my iPaq, the mere
installation of TomTom GPS 2.08 (not running it) will prevent any other
GPS software from accessing COM 8 and thus connecting to the GPS.
