installation >> Installing Outlook 2003 in place of OL 2002

by Raymond Sanborn » Wed, 07 Jan 2004 06:50:22 GMT

Do I need to uninstall Outlook 2002 before installing
Outlook 2003? And, if so, will I lose any of my Outlook
2002 data when I do so?
I have a Windows XP Prof. System with Office XP installed
containing Outlook 2002.
Thanks, in advance, for any advice given.
Ray

Installing Outlook 2003 automatically removes any previous version of
Outlook, since they cannot coexist.

1. Ol 2003 is a change for the worse, I go back to Ol 2002 (XP)

I installed Outlook 2003, but after working a while with it I have decided
to go back to Ol 2002.
Why? Here are some reasons:
1. Mails in the outtray, that have been selecet or edited will not be sent
(using F9). Bug?
2. Ol 2003 often crashes when I close it
3. Where is the shortcut bar? In Ol XP I could display my outlook shortcuts
bar AND the folders. In Ol 2003 this is not possible. And the buttons on the
left down are not configurable (and it looks like a copy from Lotus Notes
(which in fact is much more user UNfriendly)
4. I connot move the column with the flags
5. I have to change for each folder manually the view, because redefining
the view seems not to work.
6. displaying an email thread (like in Outlook Express) still not possible.
There are some possibilies to show things like an email thread in Ol 2003,
but none of them is suitable.
7. Ol 2003 often "thinks" I double clicked, when I do a left click. This is
really only in Ol 2003 the case, and not in other applications
8. In the VBA editor when I press F1, the tab where I can type in a question
or a word or view the contents of the help is missing??? Where is it. Well,
I can go to the Help menu and another window is open. Why has this been
split to 2 windows, and if I click at one of the help windows, the other get
hidden by Outlook. That is unusable.
And the search window is always top most. That is not usable, too.
9. The design: it is a mixture of the old and a new style, but it is not
really a good design. The elements itself are good, but the mixture is a
little mess: old buttons, scrollbars in the dialogs, new buttons in the
toolbar. old list header in dialog boxes. new (or what ever) list header in
the mail view.
10. changing the view seems to be slower.
11. I did not succed to get rid of the Outlook tray icon(s).

and where are real the improvements?
the junk email is one and the icons look smarter,
I can store pictures in the contacts (well this was possibel in Ol XP as
well)
The calender view has been improved.

3. OL 2003 Calendar Invitations Not Received by OL 2002

I am sending my OL 2002 (XP) colleagues meeting
invitations, but the calendar event never reaches their
inbox. What is strange is that meeting updates to the
same calendar events DO reach their inbox. Why is the
original meeting request not making it through?

I know it's unusual but I need to migrate backwards from 2003 to 2002. When
exporting the 2003 .pst and then importing to 2002 an error of "not
compatible" occurs.

Is there a backwards migration tool or any suggestions (other than emailing
all my stuff from 2003 system to the 2002 system). FYI - the 2003 is a
personal laptop and the 2002 is on the corporate system.

7. New/Incoming Mail Notifications: OL 2002 vs OL 2003

Hello all,

In OL 2002 (with & without MS Exchange Server), the notifications for new
mail was play a sound, change mouse cursor, and display a message box. They
all worked fine. They even worked for messages that had rules to move to
other mail folders when they came in. A message would come into the Inbox,
all the notifications would occur, the message would be moved to appropriate
folder because of rule. If I clicked yes on the message box, the moved
message would open from it's new location.

But now in OL 2003 (w/ MS Exchange--haven't tested w/o), I can only get the
notifications on the Inbox. For any messages that are moved to other
folders because of rules, no notifications occur.

Is there any work-around to get notifications on messages that get moved to
other folders?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide,

Conan Kelly
