Microsoft Office Outlook >> Unread Items behavior

by Jaye » Thu, 13 Oct 2005 23:50:56 GMT

Hello,

I have a user who swears that her link to "Unread Items" in Outlook 2003
used to not include unread items in the deleted items folder. Now, if she
deletes an item without reading it or marking it as read, it shows up under
the "Unread Items" link under Search Folders. Is there any way to have the
Unread Items link not include unread items in the deleted items folder?

Thank you,

~Jaye

I just tried it here and the standard Unread Items folder doesn't show
things that are unread in the Deleted Items folder. Did her Unread Messages
folder get deleted & recreated somehow?

i Jaye,

Thank you for posting here!

Based on my experience and tests, I agree with Vince that by default the
standard Unread Mail search folder in Outlook 2003 does not include the
items in Deleted Items folder. This issue may occur in either of the
following reasons. So please try the corresponding suggestions:

1. If this problematic search folder is created and customized by the user
(not the standard Unread Mail folder), this behavior may occur if the
Deleted Items folder has been included in the search range of this folder.
To check this, right click the problematic search folder -> Customize this
Search Folder -> Browse. Make sure the Deleted Items folder is not
selected.

2. If this issue still occurs, I suggest that we recreate the problematic
search folder and see if it works.

3. If the problem persists, we can create a new Outlook profile. A new
profile is a new environment for us to use Outlook. Creating new profile
will not do any damage to the old profile or cause any data loss. Please
follow the steps in the Microsoft KB article below:

How to create a new e-mail profile in Outlook 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829918

If this issue disappears in the new profile, we can use the methods
provided in the following KB article (it also applies to Outlook 2003) to
restore the data in the new Outlook profile:

OL2002: How to Back Up, Restore, or Move Outlook Data
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=287070

4. In case the steps above do not help resolve the issue, please let me
know if the problematic search folder is created on an Exchange mailbox or
a personal folder (local .pst file).

I hope the information above is helpful.

If anything in my post is unclear, feel free to let me know.

Have a good day!

Thanks & regards,
