mr. klein.

a few months ago i attempted to install open-cobol via your
instructions... with no luck at all. tonight; different story. i'm not
a linux user and a few of your instructions seemed predisposed to linux
gurus, but i managed to figure them out. i ran all the tests, including
the test that had to be downloaded, and everything worked fine. so;
thanks for your help. there is absolutely no way that i could have
figured this out on my own.

i have a wish list all ready. there should be a batch file equivalent
in linux... the search begins after a few hours sleep. and i'll require
an open-cobol programmers guide; again after some sleep.

just how much time did you spend figuring this stuff out?

thanks again.

Linux has the "shell script."

thanks louis. i did my research yesterday (as i said i would) and
discovered 'shell script', and i found and downloaded a cobol85
programming guide (in pdf). my initial reaction to reading about 'shell
scripts' was to post a request for someone (hint) to code one up (using
the structure defined by mr klein in his example) and maybe get me klein
to include it with his stuff.

i'm thinking about going linux and leaving micro$ucks forever, but
haven't made the commitment yet. my ability to learn j'new' things has
greatly reduced since medical docs have become a major part of my life.
and looking at shell scripts doesn't bring me much comfort.

one thing is sure; and that is that i'm having a real bad day today and
all my varied projects are on hold.

thanks for the quick reply.

ps1: google cobol-anything and you'll find stuff going back decades
credited to mr klein or mr dashwood. those two guys are not only old
(i'm 60 so i can say that) but have left their finger prints all over cobol.

ps2: when i installed cygen and open-cobol i did it MY way. the only
things that gets installed to the 'c' drive on my machine are things
that are supplied by micro$ucks; every thing else installs to my 'd'
drive. i consider the process of modifying mr klein's stuff to meet my
requirements as a valuable learning experience. i don't understand
everything i did, but it works. also, for example, mr klein creates an
'alias' called 'd2u' but continues to use 'dos2unix' to get things done.
'd2u' works so in the 'readme' file i created for my use i replaced
'dos2unix' with 'd2u'... not much really but i was so proud.... some
days it doesn't take much...

Sorry for not replying earlier.

I agree that the current OpenCOBOL "system" (installation and use) is targeted
at Linux (or Unix) users who know (and love) C.

There are a couple of things that I can say in "defense" of this:

1) If you are using OC to develop a production "system", the chances are that
you are doing so for a Linux/Unix and NOT a Windows environment. Therefore,
you need to know most of this stuff any way.

2) Most "open source" projects are targeted to those in the Linux (or Unix)
environment and, therefore, they don't really think about providing tools for
those not familiar with them.

You *might* want to look at the COBOL-IT "derived" version of OC. I think it
may "better" bundle and provide more "user-friendly" stuff for the non-Linux
COBOL person. However, it doesn't (always) keep up with all the syntax support
added to OC.
