tex >> Looking for a package doing: 1^{st}, 2^{nd}, 3^{rd} etc.

Is there any package for doing: 1^{st}, 2^{nd}, 3^{rd} etc. ? That is,
with text superscripts. If not, does anyone have a \def for this?
Thanks for your help. Oz.

If you go to
http://www.ctan.org/search.html
and enter into the package description search box a "1st" (that's a
one, followed by a st) then there are two packages that look suitable
to me. (Of course, there may be others, or better ones.)

The fmtcount package provides the commands \ordinal{ctr} where ctr is
the name of a counter and \ordinalnum{n} where n is a number. E.g.
\ordinal{page} or \ordinalnum{3}. If you use the "raise" package option
the st, nd, rd, th will be a superscript.

As I posted in < XXXX@XXXXX.COM > on Thu, 10 Nov 2005

Unless you are trying to mimic Word, or typeset in the style of the
19th century, you really, really don't want to do this. It went out
of fashion early in the 20th century, and would have died a peaceful
and natural death had not Microsoft reanimated the zombie.

But as Peter says, it's considered a bit antiquated these days.

6. Q: looking for package to draw page layout lines

Sorry for the wording, I don't know exactly what the terminology is.

I'd like to draw at least one frame on my compiled pages (in practice
only in draft mode) to show the dimensions of the current
textarea. From that I can measure margins and do some checks of
dimensions in case I messed up the LaTeX class modifications. I'm
using TeXLive 2007 on an AMD64 machine running Ubuntu GNU/linux, and
am using AUCTeX environment with Emacs 22.0.990.1.

I searched using Google and CTAN for "page", "frame", "textarea",
"outline" but could not find anything that looked remotely like what I
think I want. I wonder if such a package exists, or whether I need to
use PostScript specials or something to do such drawing?

Any hints much appreciated.

<Diversion>

In explanation: I've been ordered to submit a scientific conference
abstract in Word or text format. The rules are somewhat ambiguous,
partially because the example document does not follow the purported
guidelines. In order to make sure the editors know what my
mathematics and tables are supposed to look like I will submit a PDF
as well, hence my attempt to replicate the style in LaTeX (apart
from that, submission to a journal should follow, in which case I
need the information in LaTeX format anyway).

Below, a verbatim extract from the rules:

"It must be single spaced, using TIMES font, 12 on 12 PITCH and
  right margin justified"

I don't know if it's me that is lacking in terminological skills,
but it seems like a very strange combination.

8. Package for good looking plots using Tex?

Hello,

We need to plot some data (comparing performance of couple of methods with
peak signal-to-noise ratios etc) and the Matlab output looks very rough like
missing some good Anti-Aliasing. Is there a Tex package that offers really
good looking plots .. I don't like the plots from gnuplot too much either. I
would prefer something more on the spirit of R package ggplot2 but using it
feels sort of weird after having all our code in Matlab at this point :)

TIA,
Best regards,
Giovanni
