I have one on my Atmos.

Last time I checked most people had got a 3.5" though many still had 3"
also - it being the standard Oric disk format for some time. 3" (only) users
are in a minority.

Mickael Pointier - XXXX@XXXXX.COM :

I was in a hurry when I wrote my message... May be it's not so clear ;-)

As you know every single oric user here may be you can tell me how many of
them own/use a floppy drive ?

Because, most applications are targetted to tapes OR floppy... It does make
a big difference : for adventure games for example (sounds, pictures, and
so on)

Do you know this ratio ?

Well, I guess it's important to do the separation between people that mostly
use real orics, and people that mostly use emulators.

Considering the fact that disc drives are quite hard to find, most people
have Orics only with tape players, so they are obliged to use emulators to
watch things that work only on disks.

In the end, I consider that things like small arcade games should be
targeted to tape users, but should be writable on floppies if wanted (in
this situation it's a good idea to not have a multipart game with a
specialised loader, except if it's in BASIC and thus easily modified to load
from disc).

Complex things that require lots of graphics and sounds should be targeted
to disc users, because there's no point in cutting down this kind of program
to make it playable from tape.

A way to increase the ratio of disc users is to make quality disc only
productions, this will perhaps motivate people to be interested in the
current projects like Thierry Bestel's new microdisc controller board.

Now I don't hesitate. If I need to get 16 more kb, I target what I do for
floppy disc :)

Yes, my post had a wrong title : I should have say "ORICs / Floppy drivers

Right...
Said differently: most people that *have* Orics are tape-based, but most
people that *use* real-Orics are disk-based.
Me excepted, I don't think many Oric users still use the tape port of their
Orics (I often use a PC as a tape-player :-)

Not so sure this will be true in the future unless we find a source for
new disk controllers... My disk drive went mad about 2 years ago, since
then I'm on Euphoric or back to tape-based real Orics :-)

Yes, this is right. OUM succeeded in getting the majority of it's members
using a disk interface of some kind. Many purchased Steve Hopps interface.
Someone needs to give him a nudge and see if he will sell his stock. (I
tried a couple of times a few years ago).

Most people have access to a disk system now if you include Euphoric. It's a
better system so I would favour it. I tend to use tapes to convert software
on to disk.

No, but my advice would be : don't use a floppy if it isn't
really needed.

On the physical side, not everybody who has a floppy drive has a
Microdisc. I have a Jasmin.

On the virtual side, not all emulators emulate a FDD.

If you need random access to large amounts of data, it's OK to
require a floppy. Otherwise, go for plain old .tap/CLOAD.

Hmmm - that's true.
