Oric computers >> Oric 16k...

by imbriumdayz » Mon, 08 Nov 2004 22:52:35 GMT

Hello all, I'm a retro bod but new to the Oric. Having recently got
myself one I've begun the hunt for games but hit a snag. It is an
Oric1 16k, some of the games I have are 48k only. Is/was there any
sort of workaround or upgrade/hardware/chip etc that can allow the use
of these games at all in any way? I have searched the net for help,
and thought that someone here may be able to help, as having read
threads before posting, you seem old hands!

Many thanks :)

Sure, you can upgrade it to 64KB (only 48KB are accessible if you don't have
a disk controller).
But this requires you a nifty operation of de-soldering all the existing
memory chips (either two 4416, or eight 4116)...
If this frighten you, there's another solution: finding a collector and
swapping your 16K Oric1 against a 48K Atmos.
16K Oric1 are much rarer than 48K Atmos, maybe you could even swap your 16K
Oric1 against two Atmos :-)

Cheers,

Fabrice

Personaly I would keep the 16k Oric 1 unmodified, because it's quite
uncommon today :)
And Atmos are quite "easy" to find.

Many thanks Fabrice and everyone who has replied, it is much
appreciated :) I don't know how handy I'd be with a soldering iron,
given that I can inflict serious burns with a tea bag! Maybe I'll
have to get a 48k model and keep the 16k for whatver I can find for it
and as a nice collection piece. Gives me an excuse for more clutter!
lol :)

I have spent the last 48 hours trying to track down 16k games - I
didn't realise how uncommon they were in comparison to the 48k. Am
hoping that there will still be some decent text adventures about
though! My partner remembers having Lords of Time and the Hobbit on
his old Oric, but from what I've found htis would seem to be
conflicting...LOT was a level9 game which, according to the Reluctant
Dragon site were only ever released for the 16k. But the Oric Site
ont he other hand lists Hobbit as 48k?! Pah!

I remember having seen in a french magazine an adventure game called
"Golden baton" but was unable to see it in real life. (only screenshot
similar to the Hobbit)

What about you ? :)

The Hobbit definitely is a very big game, I remember how long it is to load
it from tape !
It uses hires display, in this mode only 37 KB are available for the code of
a program and The Hobbit fills it nearly completely...
One of the only Hires program I remember to be 16K-compatible is Painter,
very enjoyable once you figure you have to keep keys pressed in order to
move smoothly at the crossroads...

Cheers,

Fabrice

Hi Peter,
I have been quite bitten by the Oric bug! Will have to aim for a 48k
model or an Atmos I think :) The 16k is a surprise crimbo prezzie for
my partner (whose first comp was an Oric) but I now plan one of my own
after absorbing myself in all things Oric!

That's a shame as I was hoping to get hold of it for the 16k! Just an
excuse to get another ;) How improved is the Atmos over the 48k
model?
Am a big text adventure fan, and was impressed at the list available
for the Oric on the Reluctant Dragon site. I'll be sure to keep an
eye out for Painter and anything adventurish.

Thanks :)

Hiya RainyDay,

Your partner is gonna love that prezzie - I know I would.
Would swap partners to get it - but my wife would kill me! LOL

Have you tried using an emulated Oric yet?
Unsure which platform you are using (PC/Linux/Mac/Amiga/etc), but you will
find a good list here:
http://oric.free.fr/emulator.html

Personally I use Euphoric on the PC. Love it since you can also use emulated
disks and have extremely easy access to Oric software.
http://www.oric.org is a great website, and contains a huge list of
programs, most of which are available for download.

Of course, you could write something for us all to enjoy ;)

BTW, are you an ELO fan? (Going by the name of 'RainyDay')

Lol :) Yes, hopefully he will. Just better hope that there won't be
a fight on Christmas Day over who gets to play Harrier Attack or
anything else! lol.

I havne't yet tried it no. It is something i'll have to try,
especially if I can't track down some of the more interesting sounding
adventure games. I'll have to check out their archive.

As long as I'm not inputting hours worth of basic from an overly
complicated book, only to run it and discover that it doesn't
work...Ahh, the memories!

Alas, no! Just like the rain. I know. Am odd :)
