Oric computers >> A little bit out of scope but interesting : a SID Player for Atari 800xl/xe

by Kamelito » Thu, 07 Oct 2004 05:29:30 GMT

Hi all,

I remember Jon saying that the TOL muzak will play like on the C64.
A programmer manage to wrote a SID player for the Atari 800xl.
I tested it on an Emulator and its not bad at all !
I've been told on a post that it play really nice on a real Atari 800xl/xe.

Do you think that its possible on the Oric ?
cheers

Hello,

It's already done, you should subscribe to CEO ... :) It's written in the
issue of october, even if it exists for one year now.

Hiya Jede,

Thanks so much my friend for your excellent article.
Could not sleep much tonight, so woke up early (now 3:23am) and worked on
getting the Oric Sid player working on my system. Works great!!!!!
Only problem I am having is getting the "display_volume_bars" to work.
Shall try that tomorrow - time to get back to bed and continue resting.

Glad to be here for the Oric - Twilight, you are a living marvel!!!
(and thanks also to DBug for the tools that made this conversion possible).

Agreed - so glad I joined CEO.

Message to DBug.....

You are so right - I tried again with Sidplay (downloaded SidPlay2/W) and it
is SO much better than using Winamp.
Nuff said, apart from thanks!

Hi

I'm a big fan of Sid songs mostly, Hubbard, Galway, Daglish, MON, Tim
Follin, Huelsbeck and so on...

After the C64, the first (to my knowledge) Sid player was an Amiga Disk
called the 100 most remembered C64 tunes. Then come Playsid and the rest
is history...

I though like yourself that Sidplay/Sidplay2 etc was good, until I
bought an harsid card and I can tell you that it a whole better than
software emulation. There's also the catweasel that I bought recently
but its not yet installed in my computer so I can't tell if its better
than the hardsid card.

Hiya Kamelito,

Personally Sid playing is not that high up on my list, and only listen to
part of the collection very occasionally.
Still it is good to have a good player to do so.
However, for someone like me, getting a hardsid would be a little bit of
overkill - but I do understand fully why you and others would get one.

The Oric sid player does play sids, but definately not to the quality of
Sidplay or a real sid chip/C64.
It was just the fact that it was possible (thanks to Twi, Dbug, Jede) that
marvelled me.

On the subject, I know it was fairly common among Commodore Plus/4
owners to get an expansion card with a SID chip, much like the very
first edition of HardSID. It was then allocated a range of registers
and you could at least compose but also play SID music using a
slightly modified player.

I don't know if this is possible on any other computers, 6502 based
or not - I once thought about making a SID cartridge for the VIC-20.
If it is not rocket science, it would be a cool addition as well as
the emulation player.

Hum, you can remove me from this list, because I'm in no way involved in
this project.

Hi,

I am a bit surprised, because article is written in french, how do you
translate it ?, it was not really easy to understand this article without
speaking french ! If you understand my article with any translator, i am
happy because it was a technical article, but you ( An english reader)
manage to code this with my explanations :)

Anyway, i did a small code in order to simplify osid in this article. The
main work is from Jon (Who always surprise me by his idea and his
knowledge !). I only do this code, and i wrote this little 'manual'. BTW,
OSID is really great to heard on a real Oric.
Thanks so much also to Dbug who code really good stuffs/tools for the oric

For display_volume_bars, you can do what you want with it. I agree it's not
easy to understand, but if you have a look to the commented "display bar"
code (In osid player) you could understand something. If you need some
help, i can send you the code i do for the dancing cow (on the CEO disk)

Hiya Jede,

TheSpider can be very surprising.
What I did was this.....
Took each page in turn from the PDF and text copied it, and then placed it
into Google French-English translation. After each translation I would copy
and paste it into a text document.
When all three pages were translated, I then compared the text document
(with now no paragraphs) and formatted it, moving some of the misplaced text
(copying from a PDF will do this) into the right order.
The translation, although not perfect was enough to help me understand.
Of course, the commands themselves were not translated and they were pretty
easy to follow.
So, all thanks go to you for your excellent writing skills for it to be
translated.

I would love to hear it on a real Oric - Euphoric does a pretty good job
with the sounds, but not perfect (sorry Fabrice).

See Mickael - told ya!!!!

not

Shall have another look later - did wonder why it was in /* */
If I have questions, look for my email! *grin*
