Oric computers >> A good day ;o)

Today I got through the post Les Vistiteurs on DVD - one of Frances most
successful films. There was an American remake but this is the better
original !
Also from Amazon came the book Digital Retro. It is very good and has clean
images of immaculate computers sorted chronologically. Very interesting
though there is no Oric Atmos :o( It also credits Paul Kaufman with the
basis of the Oric-1 design which seems to be pulled from information in
'The Story So Far ...' and is perhaps stretching the truth a little which
was that Paul wrote down key features of what he envisaged Microtan 2 to
be.

Also my CEO mag arrived, so it was a pretty good day !

:o)

If I recall correctly didn't the Camputers Lynx have a horribly slow basic ?
I have a Memotech 512 and its a nice machine.

Too slow to allow for taking a photo of the computer? If you
had said the Basic was blindingly fast, I could see how the
computer would move out of the way before the shutter closed..

For it's time the Lynx was a bit old news. It had fairly basic features for
the money and wasn't too quick. The 96K was a better machine than the 48K
and the 128K better again. The 128K went at quite decent speeds IIRC but I
never owned a working one so couldn't compare it to anything.

It was too expensive and offered nothing new to attract people. And it had
very little software

Steve,

IIRC the Lynx appeared slow because it wrote all of it's text in hires
mode - it didn't have a dedicated text screen and therefore took a fair
amount of CPU time to write out the characters, but if I'm wrong please
correct me!. I only remember breifly using this machine it my local Laskys
store (remember them?) in the mid 80's. Any 4Mhz Z80 based machine should be
reasonably quick for it's time of course...

Graeme.

It just goes to show that its not really the speed of your processor that
matters but how the rest of the system hangs together. It really only takes
one bottleneck to slow the whole thing down.

Just my thoughts

Hiya Steve,

Not seen or heard of that movie, but shall keep a look out for it.

I have that book also, and love what is in it.
Like you though I would have loved to have seen the Atmos and especially the
Enterprise mentioned.
Do understand that it would be hard to cover everything.

You still getting the printed copy?
Think I got my online one about a week before that. Work laser printers are
great! :)
