system >> iMac DV - can it use large hard drives?

by TH O » Sun, 11 Nov 2007 22:51:52 GMT

I recall that some of the older powerpc macs could not use all of the
available space on newer large capacity hard drives. Is an iMac DV one
of those computers and if so, how much of a new drive can they use?

Thanks.

iMac DVs can handle, at most, 128 GB internally. However, they have no limits
on the size of external USB or FireWire drives which may be attached.

Aye, I believe the first generation QuickSilver 733MHz (the one I have
here) is the last model with that limitation.

My first generation teal iMac, I think it was 233MHz, could only access
4 GB on the system disk. I think I got around this by partitioning my
30 GB internal transplant into 4 GB and 26 GB and using alias to
communicate between them. But it is all vanishing in the mists of time.

No, these could use 128GB, but you had to have the OS on the first 8GB
of the disk, otherwise they wouldn't boot up. The slot loader was the
first to not have that limitation (I had one of those, which happily
runs still, with an 80GB drive in it)

And that applies only to OS X. Booting in OS 9.x or earlier doesn't
have that 8 GB limitation.

Ok, I'm trying to understand the replies. Am I accurate that my
slot-loading Imac DV will use up to 128GB disks? If I add a disk over
128GB will disk utility just format the first 128GB and allow me to use
the drive without any problems later on?

Thanks.

Yeah, Andy, it's all coming back to me now. The 4 GB was the size of
the original HD. But what I remember was when I put in the 30 GB, it
worked well for a few days and then started to get all sorts of system
errors. When I had cloned the system, it cloned to the original 8 GB,
but as the system updated itself, it would write outside the first 8 GB
and eventually crash. So I had to partition the drive to stop it from
doing that. Anyway, that's what I remember.

Hey ho.

I have a (moderately old) NewMotion FireWire enclosure (strictly 1394;
no USB2, at least not any that's accessible), into which I've put a 200
GB Seagate drive. When I connect it to my PowerBook (OS X 10.3.4), the
system sees it as a 128 GB drive. If I boot off the software install
DVD (OS X 10.2.7), it's the same.

I know that the enclosure is based around an Oxford chipset;
unfortunately, I don't know which particular chipset. If it helps any,
it was purchased before Apple released any laptops with FW800, and is
definitely FW400 only.

Does anybody have any clues as to what's going on that they're willing
to share? It kinda sucks, losing nearly half the disk's capacity right
off the bat. A quick google doesn't seem to turn up anything of
relevance, but I could be missing something obvious.

Thanks,

Stuart.

7. Large hard drives

I know that newer G4s can use hard drives above 128Gb but older ones
can't,

My 2002 Quicksilver G4 shows (using about this Mac) an ATA4 bus with my
current hard drive (and an ATA3 bus with my CD drive).

But the booklet on Setting Up Your PowerMac G4 says that the computer
provides support for ATA devices ... up to ATA-6 (and also Ultra ATA
devices).

This has left me confused, as I expected it would show an ATA-6 bus if
it was going to support ATA-6 devices.

I want to know whether or not I will need a PCI card if I get a large
drive. I've googled, and opinion seems to be that it should work, but in
that case why is only an ATA4 bus shown? Or is that related to the hard
drive itself, which is only 40Gb?

Also, is extra heat a significant problem if I add a bigger (and
probably faster) drive?
