Mac storage hardware >> "LaCie 40BG Mobile Hard Drive - Design by F.A. Porsche"

Hal-l-l-l-p-p! If this isn't the right place to post this, please
advise where is.

OS 9.1, iMac DV-SE c. 2000.

Within the last two-three months I bought the subject LaCie external
drive. It's been working fine until tonight.

I did not install anything (back up software?) on it -- I just plugged
it in and use it.

We've been out of town for a couple days and when we returned I booted
my machine and went looking for the LaCie (normally shows on the
desktop). It's not there.

I have an Earthlink "toolbar" thing that is a bunch of shortcuts to
files, apps, whatevers. I have the LaCie on that toolbar. Clicking on
it should open it up. I click and nothing happens.

It shows up in the Apple System Profiler under Devices and Volumes. I
have unplugged it and reconnected it - no avail. When I unplug it I get
a warning about a FireWire Device (white hand held up in black octagon)
- I don't remember exactly the words and while the box is there I can't
do anything -- no buttons to select, can't use mouse.

I've held down the Cmd+Option key while reconnecting it. Nothing
happens.

When I use Sherlock, the drive is there. I searched for a folder that I
know is on the LaCie and it was found on the LaCie, but double clicking
it came up saying the folder can't be opened because it is inside an
invisible folder.

Any suggestions? Ironic that my husband and I were three hours ago
discussing the idea of an external drive for back-up storage.
Thanks,
Barb

[in regards to a LaCie external drive that no longer appears on the desktop]

Have you checked the Finder preferences -- General -- to see if there is a
checkmark by the CDs, etc. display on the desktop option.

(for reasons unbeknownst, at least to me, external drives are included with
CDs, etc. when it comes to whether or not Finder will display them on the
desktop)

I don't have such an option. "General" tab offers me Simple Finder or
Spring-loaded folders; and Grid Spacing. Nothing about what will be
displayed on the desktop.

I'm gonna have to bow my head in shame. I overlooked that you were on System
9 and not OS X. Unfortunately I've long forgotten how to do that in 9.

In article < XXXX@XXXXX.COM >,

Any chance that the icon is simply off screen?

On my old Apple monitor and when I was at 640 resolution (even at 800)
I'd often get folders that would open off the display.

I found a little application called "Virtual Desktop" allowed me to
find those little things and reset them back onto the visible screen
area.

If the drive is acknowledged in Sherlock, try opening a file that you
search from there to see if the drive is allowing files to be read.

Also, try disconnecting the drive, shutting down, then on next reboot
rebuild the desktop.

Then follow instructions from the manufacturer to add the drive. On
the next boot again rebuild the desktop with the drive connected.

Check any software that came with it to determine if the drive is
being properly mounted at boot. Many external drives allow a check
box option to not mount and not display.

I have an external Apple/LaCie on my G3 and it is possible via the
included software (Silver Lining) to limit what volumes/partitions
mount and display. Your Apple disk utility also allows that and if
its prefs file got munged somehow that may also be th eissue.

When 'away' I'd recommend unplugging your systems. Power surges are
known to be able to jump switching systems and cause drive issues.

I think you guys are being total a-holes. This guy presented a valid
review of a drive and did exactly what someone like me is looking for:
gave me a first-hand opinion of his experience with this drive. I used
to have an IBM drive with a five-year warranty from date-of-purchase.
Now those were the days! MattK22, don't listen to these idiots, and
thanks for taking the time to share your experience with those of us
who *do* appreciate it. The rest of you melodramatic fu*x can F. off.
Yeah, that means you about to comment on my comment. Just can't help
yourself, can you? Go out and grab yourself a life. I was just
looking for hard drive reviews and came across this nonsense. You guys
sure blasted poor Matt to smithereens. I hope you're really proud of
yourselves. Woo hoo. I know all the pitfalls and don't care about
your lectures. Again, Matt, thanks for taking the time to share, and
know there are people out there googling who are reading plenty of
negative reviews about Lacie hard drives being unreliable and quickly
failing. It is an industrywide problem (not just Lacie) but I
certainly agree, I would think twice before buying from them
(regardless of what brand is inside the case), and yes, I expect them
and other companies who manufacture and/or supply hard drives to begin
to answer consumer needs with more reliable backup solutions. Thanks
again, Matt.

4. Lacie Porsche Drive & Mac OsX

Hi,

First excuse me if this is not the correct place to post this and
please tell me where it would be better, thanks.
I have a Mac Mini and bought a Lacie 250Gb USB 2.0 Drive. I had no
problem with it, until I upgraded my Panther to Tiger. Since then, I
had problems making the mac detect the hard drive. I had to connect
and disconnect, reboot, leave the mac unplugged for 15min and
reconnect, connecto to different usb port, etc... until when it manages
to detect the drive randomly every time. I decided to turn back to
Panther. I still have problems detecting the drive, but now, when it
finally appears in Finder, when i try to browse any of it foulders
Finder simply hangs and I cant continue using it. Even if I a force
Finder to restart, it stays like that. The strange thing is that the
rest of programs can still acces the drive. I can play all my iTunes
library which is stored in the LaCie drive. I even have a torrent
which is being stored in the external drive which keeps downloading
without problem.
ny one has any idea? s there a way to effectively kill and
restart finder? hould I use a different program to browse my drive
rather than Finder?
By the way, I have 256Ram and the external drive works without any
problem in my Windows box.

Thank you very much for any help or advice any of you could give me.

Thanks
