I've got a Microsoft Sidewinder Strategic Commander, which I use to
play Asheron's Call. I'm very pleased with it.

It's a very flexible device. You can program any of the 24 or so
buttons to send any sequence of characters when pressed, so I'm sure
it could cope with 'serious' applications as well as games.

I got mine on Ebay. Alternatively, they still seem to be available
brand new quite cheaply.

6. MS Sidewinder Strategic Commander

Just wanted to drop a line to anybody who wants to know.

I'm running MS XPpro and attempted to install the
Strategic Commander last night.

Well on my system it works fine AND the configuration
program and drivers loaded perfectly. I double click the
program icon and the window to configure the Strategic
Commander fires right up and works great.

The hardware works perfectly...all the lights on the unit
light up and the shift buttons works along with the three
position program MEMORY Switch.

I bought the unit back when I was running windows 98SE and
then could never get it to work under 2000 so I assumed it
wouldn't work under XP or XPpro. So I never used the unit
EVER. Just on a whim I pulled it out of the original box
and plugged it in to the USB port and loaded the software.

HERE IS THE CATCH

Plug the USB device in first and let XP install it to
where it wants and recognizes where it should go. After
the unit is installed...Then install the software
accompanying the device.

The software takes a while to load...so just let it
run...and run...and run...sooner or later you will get the
window that says EULA...Click here [NEXT].

After installation and some research and looking around in
the CONTROL PANEL I found that the Strategic Commander
unit loaded its drivers under the KEYBOARD section.
Windows XPpro recognizes the unit as an "HID keyboard
emulation device"...NOT UNDER the game controller
section. If you try to install it as a "game controller"
that is where you will run into issues.

Basically the unit is a mouse, with keyboard functionality
in the buttons. I am running service pack 2 with
DirectX9...and the rest is nothing special.

Please pass this message around or PIN it somewhere so
that all the people that own this great device can use it
under WIN XP. I know several people are having issues.
