I'm not familiar with "Buckling Analysis", but well with
Rayleigh-Ritz. In principle, you should determine an Action J, which
is an integral and minimize this integral with respect to some
variational parameters. In matlab it means you should use
"fminsearch"
You usually have linear combinations of trial functions (that
should obey the boundary conditions).

Example: Poisson's equ. in 1D have J=Int(L),
L=(1/2)*(dU/dx)^2-f(x)*U. With U(-a)=U(a)=0 you could take
U(x)=C0*(a^2-x^2). Integrating J and minimizing with respect to C0
gives you some result.
