RenderMan & RISpec >> Volume shader for non-radial planet atmosphere

by AltHero » Mon, 28 Mar 2011 04:06:30 GMT

Hallo to all,
volume shaders to simulate a planet atmosphere are well known starting
from "Texturing & Modeling 3rd ed." planetatmo.sl shader (from
Gritz-Musgrave) that works pretty well, for spherical bodies. But gas
giant planets like Jupiter, Saturn etc. aren't spherical but
ellipsoidal. Does someone know how to handle that geometry and how to
modify the radial GADD proposed in TM 3? I tried to insert in rib file a
Z scaling attribute but - obiously - doesn't work. Moreover
planetatmo.sl seems affected by severe aliasing problems in planet limb
( the bright line that blends sky with ground is very thin) and I dont
know how to handle it.

Thanks for your help,

Giuseppe

6. VOLUME FOG...looks like volume snow :?

Hello,
and thank you for reading.

I have been experimenting with volume fog effect within a cylinder gizmo
but the effect i achieve, even after many tweakings, is rather like a
volumetric snow blizzard (if there is one). The fog is granulated and
evenly speckeled rather than a smooth misty white gradation.

I am trying to achieve the smooth mist effect. Has anybody experienced
similar problems? Are there quick solutions?

8. Planet needing a global fire effect.

Hello there,

I have a planet. I would like to create a rolling fire type effect that
would skim across the surface, eventually encompassing the whole planet.
The camera skims close to the planets surface and rests/focuses on a
landmass. Ideally, I'd like the effect to start and grow with the camera
following the rolling/fiery edge. I have experimented with animating the
Hemisphere spinner within the Sphere object, but I found mapping the
resulting growing ball very difficult. I need the 3d effect that a sphere
would give. Any ideas most welcome and thanks in advance. I'll post a
rendering when I'm happy with the result.

James.
