RenderMan & RISpec >> How to Enter in the Renderman World !

by sebkaine » Thu, 09 Feb 2006 06:56:43 GMT

I am Student and Maya User tired of Mental Ray that is very good , but very
very slow ! I know C/C++ & have some good Algebra/Analyse knowledge ! So i
decided to Learn Renderman .

But it seems to be very hard to get into this world. It looks to be very
tricky & just for few enthusiast. First of all just for having renderman on
Maya 7 i spend a lot of time without any success !

- First i contact Pixar in order to get a Student license but they redirect
me to their European Sale office http://www.escapestudios.co.uk/ ! There i
Get a NO !

- So i Had to find a Crack version ! I try to install it , RAT & Prman looks
to work , all is Ok but when i try to lunch a render Maya Freeze ! So MTOR
is causing Maya To crash. For one Weeks i try to fix the problem but without
no Success ! So i am still unable to discover Renderman !

- So know i've just discover that there is Renderman Compliant so how does
it Works ?
is there any Equivalent of MTOR for Maya integration & of PRman render
engine with the same quality for the final result ? And with the same
functionality (Oclusion , Ray Tracing , Motion Blur , Toon Shading ... )

Thanks for your Help , The Road to Renderman is Long & Hard ^_^ !

This was my path to enter Renderman world:

I got:

Book: "Essential Renderman Fast!" by Ian Stephenson
Ayam, a free modeler: http://ayam.sourceforge.net/ayam.html
BMRT 2.6, a free Renderman compliant renderer, and
Pixie, another nice free Renderman compliant renderer
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/ ~okan/Pixie/pixie.htm

Hi, If you are using Maya you should try using LiquidMaya which is a
very nice plugin to integrate Maya with Renderman renderers. Second i'll
suggest that you look into 3Delight which offer 1 free license (2
processes) Aqsis and Pixie, all these 3 renderers will work within Maya
+ LiquidMaya and all of them are free.

Hope this helps a bit and good luck!

Cheers

Please read the monthly newsgroup's FAQ compiled by Larry Gritz,
creator of the now defunct BMRT. There you can find information like
online tutorials and books. My advice is after reading Essential
RenderMan Fast maybe you want to follow with Advanced RenderMan.

You could also try this combo: Maya + Liquidaqsis + Aqsis.

Aqsis looks to be a great community ! Lot of DOC , a good forum ! I will try
it .

What about his performance compare to Pixar Product ? Can i do great toon
shading style & great photorealistic style ?

Last I checked, prman supports ray tracing, but aqsis doesn't. This
can make some types of things hard/impossible in aqsis. That said,
both support programmable shaders, so you should be able to create
almost any effect that you can imagine.

As for speed, I don't have a license of prman, so I can't do a direct
comparison.

WARNING.. this is a bit of a ramble/vent

theres obviously a difference. i've been in both.. several times. i'm
returing to art school for probably the 3rd time. going on 10 years.
i've had a job in the industry that started as an internship and ended
in a layoff. i'm maybe 8 to 10 years older than most of the students
in all of my classes. i'm taking mostly upper level art courses..
computers in art 3(4300 level course.) drawing 4(also an senior level
course) and i notice that i'm the most skilled in both of these
classes. i'm not boasting in this asessment. i notice that in my
computer art course (which is centered around lightwave), i'm so far
ahead in my comprehension of the program and its usage that its almost
embarassing to show my projects for critique. i feel like i'm showing
off. the job i had was in web design but it started as an internship
for a 3d animation project and was a result of a portfolio i turned in
to the company containing projects from my first semester in a 3d
animation class. even in that first semester, which was the first time
i'd ever used any 3d graphics program, i demonstrated an understanding
of the program and its concepts that was years ahead of anyone else in
my class. but this school is not known for its visual design program.
it is a relativly small school with a mediocre visual design program.
i still wonder though, cant there be any student here that has
ambitions to be a 3d animator, modeler etc. or someone who wishes to
work in some kind of visual design industry? because all i see are
people who will never make it anywhere in their chosen field. i dont
even think I have what it takes myself! i see myself as an amature.
someone who simply pays attention and can figure out enough to dazzle
the students in the class along with their missplaced professor. who
are the people who make it in the 3d industry? does anyone whom, not
knowing their own ambition as a student to become a 3d graphics
designer, none the less, finds him/herself working in the industry of
special effects, or 3d animation or visualization? is performance in
college an indication of ones potential to excell in the industry?
thanks for yer time

4. Getting graphics characters when entering data and program editing

I am having an issue with an Access application. When entering data in text
boxes, I sometimes start getting ASCII graphics characters instead of text.
Once this happens, any editing I attempt to do on forms also appears as
graphics. The only way to get past it is to shut down the project and
re-start it. My application is on a network drive, and I am seeing it on more
than one machine. I have tried converting to Access 2007 and see the same
thing.
