solidworks, Working in NM

Does anyone have any experience working as a Mechanical Designer in New
Mexico? Particularly Los Alamos, but ABQ wouldn't be out of the question.
I have been working in Mass. designing with SWX since '97 and the wife and I
are making a move west. I am researching NM and Colorado Springs, Co., but
am finding mostly Pro-E and Acad out there.

I would call up the SolidWorks VARs in that area for a start.

I know that there are SW users at Sandia Labs because I met some of the
people at SWW. I also know because my brother-in-law works there, and he
and my sister live in Albuquerque.

I moved my family to New Mexico from the midwest in 1985 and I have
never been sorry about the move. New Mexico is a great place to live,
especially if you are the outdoors type. Nothing but great weather,
lots of open spaces, mountains, deserts etc.
The local VAR here is SunWest CAD http://www.sunwestcad.com/ , they
are a great bunch of people. Do you have a job offer in Los Alamos? A
job at the labs is generally hard to get unless you know somebody or
are recruited. Los Alamos and White Rock (a bedroom community near Los
Alamos) are nice places to live, but they are expensive places to buy
homes. Santa Fe is a bust as far as employment is concerned because
there is very little industry there and homes are real expensive. I
settled in Albuquerque and I have never had a real big problem staying
employed. Let me know if you come out for a visit, perhaps I can give
you a local perspective.

Wow, thanks for all the great recommendations.

I have applied at the Lab for a possible 6 positions, unfortunately they are
almost all Pro-E, but one of them had a requirement to know Solidworks, so
maybe they are waking up ;-)
I do have several friends there, one who is rather high ranking, so I am
hopeful.

I also sent a resume to Sandia. The reason for this is I remembered when I
went to SWW in 2001, I met a women there who gave a talk who was the
director or engineering or something. I told her back then that I was
interested in moving to NM and she said to come out and she'd get me a job.
Well, that was 5 years ago and I don't even remember her name.

I've also contacted several contract shops out there and sent my resume.

We are moving out, that's a certainty, as soon as our house sells. One area
we are looking at is the Jemez area, which I think I can commute from to
ABQ.

I will also give a call to Sun West Cad to see what they have to say.
