solidworks >> PDMWorks Add-in Slows File Open... HELP!

by Fye » Tue, 31 Jan 2006 23:25:20 GMT

We're in the process of upgrading everything to Version 2006. I've
updated my seat of SW to 2006 SP3.1 (standalone license), and we've
updated the Vault to 2006 SP0.0. The vault is about 20G large, and
we've never had any problems with it at all.

Normally, a simple part (a simple cube) usually takes microseconds to
open up on my machine. But, if I have the PDMWorks add-in running, it
takes about 20 seconds. This is just a part on the local machine - not
even entered into PDMWorks.

This problem was repeated on another machine with a network license of
PDMWorks and SolidWorks 2006.

I am not saving backup copies, and have the vault set to NOT keep extra
copies of latest files. The "Validate Vault" setting is unchedcked.

Any help is appreciated... this rollout is going to be very nasty if I
can't find an answer to this soon!

Ok - I think I've localized the problem...

I believe PDMWorks is taking a long time to search through the vault
before realizing that it is not in there.

Ok, fixed the problem. For future reference for anyone who experiences
this, here is what it was. Basically, we didn't have the latest
service pack for the Vault service installed (currently 3.0 for version
2006). Once we updated the Vault, and subsequently, the clients, the
problem disappeared.

Keeping the vault service pack updated does not always help with the
vault search speed. We have always done this as standard practice. The
last "fast" PDM Works we had was Solidworks 2005 SP4.

One thing that helped us with search speed is updating pre-2006 PDM
works files to 2006 using the Solidworks Task Scheduler- "Update PDM
Works Files" Utility. This is under
Start--->Programs--->Solidworks 2006 SP3.0. This is not the greatest
utility. If it fails on updating a few files, you have to start over
with the entire project directory. Also, don't try it during working
hours or else the PDM works users get errors. It takes a long long time
if you have lots of files.

2. Opening Excisting Files - builds slow

3. Files Open Slow (yet again)

I know this has been touched on before but after doing a search, I couldn't
find any of the posts.

Ever since SW2004 (what I am currently using), opening files is a slowww
process. It doesn't seem to make that much difference if the files are
local or if they are located on the server. Prior versions of SW would open
even fairly large assemblies in a reasonable amount of time. But SW2004
seems to take approx. 50-75% longer. This isn't news to most of you.
You've probably experienced it yourselves.

But I just noticed something that I had never noticed before. When opening
a file that is still in a previous version (SW2003 or prior), it will open
very fast in SW2004, just like in previous releases. Once saved in SW2004
format, it becomes slow when opening this file in the future.

With that being said, it seems to me that SW2004 itself is not the problem.
It is capable of opening the files fast just like previous versions.
Instead it seems that something in the translation of the file to SW2004 is
what is causing files to open slowly. Like maybe some kind of "flawed" data
has been added to the files themselves during SW2004 translation that is
causing this slow down.

I just did a test and had some unexpected results. I opened my task manager
and switched to the network tab. I opened several assemblies that are
already in SW2004 format. Under the network utilization column, I am lucky
to get 2-5%. I then opened several assemblies that were still in SW2003 or
prior format. I would say that the average network utilization was between
15-30%. After I convert and re-open the files, the network utilization goes
back down to 2-5%. I am by far a network guru, and I truly don't know what
network utilization means exactly. But this has to be a very significant
factor, right?

Anyone with more knowledge about this subject care to comment?

5. PDMWorks 2006, over a VPN working slow.

Hello,

At our company we work remotely and connect to the Vault server via VPN.

We currently are running a Windows 2003 Server and applied Service Pack 1
almost at the same time we upgraded from SolidWorks 2005 to 2006. After the
upgrade (we remove and did a new install on the server and client computers)
the connection to the Vault is extremely slow. I found some information that
if you have Windows 2003 server with SP1 you have to open ports 20000, 30000
and 40000, I am waiting for our remote server administrator to open the
ports and see if that is the problem.

I do not know if opening the ports will fix the problem.

Any Ideas?

Thank you

7. ACAD Slow when opening file dialog? Will a backup help to speed up?

When I first installed acad 2002, the open command worked very quick.
When I clicked on open file icon, I could instantly type in the name of the
file I wanted to open. Now when I select open file, I have to wait 3secs
before I can start typing in the file name. I know that does not sound
like a big deal, but I would like to improve it to how it was before. I
have over 1000 drawings in my root acad directory (I prefer to have them all
in one directory). Will it speed up things, if I back up 75% of my
drawings. Or, what about, just moving most of them to a non AutoCAD
directory? Or is it slower, just because my hard drive is getting fuller in
general. I have a p3 733mhz, 256ram, 80GB HD (only 10MB used space).
thanks
