solidworks >> Rename a assembly

by info » Sun, 02 Jan 2005 22:02:41 GMT

Hello group,

I want to rename an assembly, but i lost all the feature part references.
For example, i have the assembly file 01xxx_000_000_A and i want to rename
it in 01999_000_000_A. I can do this with the save as command. Now i can
open the assembly 01999_000_000_A and solidworks find all the parts that
are be connected with this assembly. Only the features of the parts
reference of 01xxx_000_000_A shown up in the featuremananger with e.g.
Cut-Extrude1->?
I think that i do something wrong. Can anybody help me out to do this the
correct way.

Thanx

Mike

Try saveas copy on the original assembly. External references are always to
the original assembly in which the in context feature was created based on
some kind of internal ID number. I think SW threw up a warning when you did
your saveas.

What you are saying is correct for the method applied to saving a new
assembly (i.e. the original part features are in context of the original
assembly). If you want part features to be in context of the new assembly
you must assign new part file names when saving the assembly. There are a
couple of methods to do this (a) when saving the new assembly click on
Reference button, assign new part file names and locations if desired (b)
use SolidWorks Explorer to create new assembly and assign new part file
names.

This whole file managing thing can be quite confusing as there are so many
ways and choices along the way. I still get confused
Also, there is additional information in SolidWorks Help or try
experimenting yourself on an assembly to learn how SolidWorks manages these
files. For myself, I created a three piece assembly of simple blocks and
then experimented with the different ways of saving assemblies. There is
probably one method you will not want to employ. That is saving a new
assembly, clicking on Reference button and checking off the box next to each
existing filename. Yes, it will create new part files in context of the new
assembly, but these new parts share the same filenames with original
assembly. Not a good thing to do as you know.

If you do this often, you might want to check out CopyWorks.

I haven't tried it myself, but reading the info, it looks good.

2. Renaming parts in an assembly?

Hello,

I made a 95 part assembly by taking 1 part with 95 solid bodies and
saving it as an assembly.

My problem is that everything is named "ImportedXX", where XX is 1 to
95. I need to rename all of these parts. The files themselves are
also named ImportedXX.sldprt.

When I right click a part in the feature manager, and then select
Component Properties, there is a field called "Component Name", which
displays ImportedXX. I can rename the component, say "8-32 screw",
click ok, and then the component gets renamed in the feature manager
(yay).

Now, I save my assembly, close it, reopen it, and "8-32 screw" is back
to "ImportedXX" (boo).

Any way around this, other than the time intensive process of making a
chart of which XX matches up to what name, making copies of all the
files, renaming all the files, and then replacing component 95 times?

Thanks

Kevin

6. automatic rename of cell names - SKILL program

Hi everybody,

I have to modify a top view of an IC, namely the IOPADS' cell names have
changed from previous to current release. There are about >100 of them so
I thought about some kind of automatization for the process but I have no
experience with SKILL at all so maybe you could help/guide me at least
which functions to use. Basically what I need the program to do is:
1. select each cell on a schematic (best would be to read its coordinates
from a file or at least ensure the cells are selected in proper order)
2. change its Cell name property to a new name (again given in a file
which I already have, one name on each row)
I appreciate any help you can provide.
