Not able to load Doom3 on my new system with Vista OS

Does it give you any errors? Does it install then give you an error, or
just not able to install at all? We need a little more information:
computer specs, error messages, etc..

Let us know and we should be able to get you up and running.

One tip, though: make sure your video card drivers are up to date.

I ran through it recently with no problem. IIRC, you need to download
and install DirectX 9 for programs like it to run. Vista comes with DX10...

Some Video cards do not fully implement Open Gl. Also, there is one major
patch available.

Doom 3 ran just fine on my system. It was the first game I installed on my
new PC. I did run the official id Software patch for it though. I didn't
have to install DX9 on my system either.

Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit, Intel Q6600 2.4ghz Core 2 Quad CPU, 2gb RAM,
500gb RAID-0 HD, Nvidia 8800GTX 768mb GPU (factory OC), 22" Widescreen
1680x1050 LCD, Creative SoundBlaster X-FI Audio, Logitech MX518 Gaming Mouse

1. Finished Doom3 and Farcry, Doom3 wins

For sheer enjoyment, atmosphere, immersion and thrills, Doom3 is way ahead
of Farcry.

Farcry has some cool stuff, flying hang gliders and shooting grunts and
monsters below.
Gr8 weapons (although it takes too many shots to kill some bad guys), loved
the sniper rifle.
Drivable boats and vehicles. Enjoyed taking out the gunboat crews with the
sniper rifle and hijacking the boats.
Gr8 maps, jungles, rivers, ruins etc.
Sadly missing however, is the immersion, more a clinical killing exercise
along the lines of Serious Sam. Too many factors detracting from the
enjoyment e.g. very difficult spots causing replying over and over from the
last save point. Eventually finished it and found it more enjoyable by
spamming the ammo.

3. Problems Installing Doom3

I get this error from Installshield:

1608: Unable to create InstallDriver instance.

Any help that could be given would be very much appreciated.

Also, I would like to know if there was a way to uninstall
InstallShield an re-install it. Hopefully maybe if I could
do that it would solve my problem.

Well let's take a look at doom 3 alpha... it runs slow... I dont know why it
runs slow.

I do know that id software engines are one of the fastest engines on the
face of the planet for games :) with decent graphics =D

Looking at doom 3 I see the following:

+ portal engine
+ bsp trees
+ possibly backface culling.

Ok, now I have been under a rock for the past 5 years or so lol when it
comes to graphics.

I was amazing doom 3 still does all this in cpu, but I could be wrong.

Some parts of these algorithms could be done inside the gpu.

I can imagine that a gpu can 'cut' triangles with the viewing frustum ? (
Yet I think you say this is bad or something ? )

Also new verteces can not be created inside a gpu ? or maybe it can ?
because clipping a triangle with any plane can introduce new verteces.

I saw some other power point presentation... that verteces can be clipped
??? or maybe they mean projected onto a plane or something ???

How can verteces be clipped and be usefull since now their coordinates are
totally different ? seems weird to me... seems like objects would get
deformed...

I can see how a line can be clipped or a triangle... but a vertex ? huh ?

So one question is:

Can gpu's clip lines, triangles (maybe even verteces?) against the frustum
or any other plane or triangle ?

I can also see how a gpu could do backface culling.

But I am guessing the portal engine and the bsp trees are still inside the
cpu.

I know that bsp trees are used to detect if a certain wall is behind another
certain wall so that the wall that is behind can be skipped/not drawn.

Portal engines are used to skip entire rooms.

It also looks like doom3 is using some technique to wrap objects inside
boxes... and then probably do a simpel 'is box in view' test... does that
technique have a name which is easy to remember ;) ? :)

Bye,
  Skybuck.
