1. Strange sound (from speakers) while typing

Recently my 17" powerbook has developed a weird problem.
Sometimes when I press either of the Shift keys on my keyboard,
it emits brief high-pitched sounds; they sound like quick rising
sequences of pitches, total duration maybe 1/2 second or so. It
gets really obnoxious after a minute or so...

It started while I was running 10.2.6; I've "upgraded" to 10.2.8
and the problem still persists.

Any suggestions for a fix?

Thanks much,
Marty Kent

3. file types/data types/mime types

I am puzzled about something with osX.
Why does it use the file extension for determining file type instead of
looking into the file for the type?

My Amiga used datatypes 15 years ago to determine what kind of file it
was. If it was jpeg but named .gif, no problem. The jpeg program loaded it.

For instance, I had a file on my desktop, an html file of instructions.
It had no file extension so appeared on the desktop as a blank white
rectangle. Re-named it 'html' so firefox showed up on the icon.

I just renamed it 'jpg' and GraphicConverter tried to open it. It
reported "The file 'foobar.jpg' is broken, the format is unknown or it
isn't a graphics file.
So, Graphic Converter can't open it."
Then it gives a file dump, in hex and ascii which clearly shows it to be
an html file.

Why aren't data types or mime types implemented in the user interface?
Are datatypes/mimetypes in the BSD itself? Cannot find it.

5. Compiling issues on Mac OS X for Alpine 2.00

I have experience compiling Pine and Alpine on my iBook. Until now I've
never had a problem.

I grabbed the alpine-2.00.tar.gz file and fillpara.patch.gz. I unpacked
these files and ran ./configure --prefix=/usr/local. I got this...

checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name...
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

Unfortunately my config.log file doesn't tell me a whole heck of a lot
more. I'm going to list it below. It's long, I'm sorry about that.
Could some kind soul take a look and tell me where I'm going wrong? I'm
not a programmer by trade, I just know enough to get myself into trouble.
