powerpoint, Inserting Hyperlinks

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel

I'm trying to write a presentation that is heavily dependent on Hyperlinks. I highlight the word and under the menu 'Hyperlinks' select 'Slide', then from the menu presented, click the slide I want the word to link to.

When I view the presentation initially in slideshow mode the hyperlinks work fine. Once I've saved the presentation, quitted the programme and opened it again, however, they've stopped working.

Is there any way this can be resolved? I'm using 2004 PowerPoint for Mac Version 11.2.4

I understand what you are trying to do, but I couldn't quite follow what you
were doing to get there. I made a little Jing video that you can watch to
see how I would do what you want. Try that and write back if it doesn't work
for you.

Well, yeah, there's one thing that may make quite a difference in a number
of aspects of Office performance...

According to your specs you're installation is only at 11.2.4 but 11.5.5 is
the current level. Quite honestly I'm surprised Office apps will run at all,
let alone not present more than just this one problem. That needs to be
addressed before it will do any good to troubleshoot anything else -- and
just might resolve the problem.

That also begs the question of what your current version update of Tiger
might be. The current update is 10.4.11, so verify that as well. Run Disk
Utility - Repair Disk Permissions after any updates.

If the problem persists after your software is up-to-date reply to this post
for other suggestions.

Hi David;

Nice video :-) but especially for internal Hyperlinks I typically use an
alternate method which is what I believe the OP is doing:

Slide Show> Action Settings> HyperLink to:

Either method should produce the same result but I find the additional
alternatives in the Action Settings dialog make it a more versatile
approach. It also [IMHO] is a bit more straightforward & fluently designed
than the Insert Hyperlink dialog.

Anyway: We both posted within the same minute so you probably hadn't seen my
reply, but I truly believe the problem stems from the fact that the OP's
installation of Office 2004 is still at 11.2.4 -- that means it hasn't been
updated in more than 3 years.

Yes, Bob, I now see your post as well. I use the Action Settings dialogue
box much of the time as well. Since the OP didn't mention Action Settings, I
couldn't figure out how he was creating the hyperlink to figure out if there
was a problem with the method he was using. Given that it works once and not
again, you might be right about the version not being up-to-date.

Jing is a great tool to easily make videos. It is from a reputable company,
and it is free (for the basic version). Because making videos from your
screen is so easy, I find it easier and faster sometimes to make a video
than to write out an answer in words. Jing is available for the Mac and
Windows. I had a long back and forth with a user on the Windows PPT group
and couldn't figure out what he was doing wrong (as I'm sure you've seen
before, he claimed to be doing everything I said he should do). I finally
made a Jing video to show him the correct process, and he figured out what
he was doing wrong.

Thank you both for your help - I've followed the steps as outlined in the video but to no avail: I still have the same problem I did before.

I ran Repair Disk Permissions as suggested but cannot see that it has made any difference? How do I go about updating my version of PowerPoint to the one you recommend?

First of all you have to have an active internet connection & if you're on a
laptop it's suggested that your Mac be plugged in to a power source.

It's also a good idea to log in while holding the Shift key to make sure no
other processes are running during the update process.

Launch any Office program, then go to Help> Check for Updates & let it do
its thing... You have a lot of catching up to do :-) Fortunately, though,
the 11.5.5 Update is a Combo which includes everything you need. [It might
also be a good idea to set the AutoUpdate program to check automatically on
a monthly basis so your software doesn't fall behind again.]

Restart your Mac after updating & run the repair permissions utility before
launching any of the Office programs.

I've tried your suggestion, and my version of Power Point is now 11.5.5. The bad news is that I'm still having exactly the same problem: initially the hyperlinks work but as soon as I've quitted and restarted the programme (after saving changes), they're defunct.

Is this a lost cause?
