powerpoint >> Do hyperlinks tend to break from PC to Mac?

by pete » Sun, 26 Apr 2009 07:58:34 GMT

another xplatform question (sorry guys, are you over me yet?). I'm on
PPT 2003/PC. I have a series of hyperlinks from objects/images in the
presentation out to various http websites, as well as several links
that link to slides within the same presentation.

They all work perfectly in SlideShow mode on my PC. Should I just
expect that the links will be broken when I send this deck to someone
who uses PPT2004-2008/Mac? That sucks if it's the case because I don't
currently have access to a Mac and my client is only on Mac.

Would it make a difference if something is linked as a straight
hyperlink versus an Action? One would assume hyperlinks are treated
the same way whether they are done as straight hyperlinks or through
the Action function, but assuming in PPT is never wise.

Over? Nah. We're behind you all the way, Pete. ;-)

I'd assume that they'll work. That is, as long as the Mac has a live
connection to the internet, the links to URLs should work.

The links between slides should be fine as well, though beware of adding
loads of links and watch out for links to slides with commas in the
slide title. Those can fail to work (but they'll croak on the PC too,
so you'll know in advance).

In some cases it works the same, in others not quite, but either way, it
shouldn't break.

1. PC relative links break on Mac - sometimes...

I have many PPTs made on a PC, each of which links to a file in
subfolders of the folder containing the PPT. All links are relative.

I copy the entire folder structure to a Mac and the links in SOME of
the PPTs break -- either 1) there is no link at all; or 2) link points
to the wrong file. However, the links in some PPTs are OK. It's either
all or nothing within a PPT.

This is not an issue of the files not being available on target machine
or not being compatible - folder structure is intact and I can remake
the links on the Mac.

Anyone have a clue?? Or do I just have to re-make all links (many
hundred) on the Mac???

  Thanks,
   Mike

3. Internal hyperlinks break after breaking external links

In PowerPoint 2007, when breaking external links from Excel files, internal
links from one "table of contents" type slide to individual slides are also
broken. The one or two hyperlinks on individual slides work fine.

I can't find a reference to this problem in my searches on this site and
else where.

Additional details: This file is password protected using the older 2003
standard, not the 2007. I'm doing this across a VPN, everything else has
worked fine, though a bit slow when saving etc. I'm using XP on Parallels on
a Mac, everything has worked just fine here too.

5. Virtual PC for the Mac does not run properly under Tiger (OS X 10.4.1)

June 25, 2005

I installed Tiger a few days ago. Now, every time I start Virtual PC,
Ver 7.0, I get this message:

"Virtual Switch Networking could not be started.

"Permissions for support files were set correctly, but Virtual Switch
failed to load. Please report this to Microsoft (Code: A1004)."

I can't find the right place to report this problem. Does anyone on
this group have any thoughts?

Thanks, Joe Hansen

7. Finding gnuplot tends not to work on Mac OS X under bash shell

After struggling for over a month trying to get X11 applications such as
gnuplot to work properly, I've now determined that the problems seem to
occur when you have /bin/bash as your default shell. For owners of newer
Macs you will probably have /bin/bash as your default shell and things will
almost work for you but not quite. For example you will be frustrated with
how to set the PATH environment variable other than inside
/etc/x11/xinit/xinitrc. You will find that creating ~/.xinitrc will tend
to hang the xterm application and crash X11. The environment.plist file
won't work for you, the .bash_profile file won't work for you, even though
.bash_profile will be read by the OS X Terminal application.

If you build and install gnuplot you will find that it can't define the X11
terminal type because somehow it doesn't exist even when it's plain to see
that you are starting gnuplot from an X11 xterm window.

HOWEVER, once you go into NetInfo Manager and change the default shell of
the current account to /bin/tcsh things will begin to change dramatically.
Once you do this and reboot your Mac suddenly X11 recognizes .tcshrc. So
any path you set inside .tcshrc gets set. Suddenly Matlab which runs under
X11 has the right PATH. Suddenly gnuplot knows about the X11 terminal and
can plot.

If you go back and change to the /bin/bash shell again and reboot. Things
are broken once again.
