powerpoint >> Powerpoint crashes opening a file created prior to upgrade

by swoerner » Sun, 26 Jul 2009 10:23:33 GMT

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I just upgraded to 12.2 and tried to open a ppt file I created prior, and it crashes as soon as I open it. It stays open long enough for me to see that it now displays russian characters as if the font changed. I have tried removing duplicate fonts, deleting plist files, etc, and I still have the problem.

To be clear, this is a PPT file, not PPTX, originally saved as PPT.

Hi Scott,

Can you send me a copy of your file? You can email it directly to me at XXXX@XXXXX.COM . Please include as many details as you can regarding how the file was created (i.e. from new blank template or reused an existing presentation) and the version of PowerPoint you were using prior to 12.2.

Thanks,

After backing up 12.1.9, I downloaded and installed 12.2.0. I am able to open about half my files. I can't find any pattern. Some files that I've updated within the past week open and others don't. Some files that I haven't touched in a month or two open and others don't. Some were small, others large. Really bizarre.

I do safety training for an organization that contracts with
workplaces to pirovide Safety training and regularly am contracted to
provide training for them. The trainer has an option of doing the
training using overheads or PowerPoint. The slides and overheads are
constantly updated.

Using Office 2004 on my Mac I was told I needed to contact the
originator of the PowerPoint files and have them saved in an older
compatible version of PowerPoint ( or a message to that effect).

Now using Office 2008 I figured my problems were long gone. I cannot
begin to express my suprise when I went to open the same files I
opened and used to do training on a PC computer two weeks ago with
ease and got the following message on my Mac.

"This presentation is protected by a password or Digital Rights
Management (DRM) To access the presentation, you must have a version
that is not protected by a password or DRM. I have spoken to the
trining organization and they are scratching their heads.

Any suggestions? I know they open fine on a PC?

How many files and how large are they?
Do you have access to a PC version of PowerPoint?

No matter; we mostly reply only via the newsgroup. Private email deprives you
of the chance to hear other opinions and others of the opportunity to learn from
the discussion.

5. Excel on PC crashes when trying to open file created on Mac

6. Excel crashes when opening file created by Windows user

Hi
I have been sent a file that is used for keeping simple books of
account for a school parent support organisation. I have Office 2004
intalled on my eMac running OSX.3.5. Whenever I try to open the file
Excel crashes.

I haven't used Excel before, I usually use Appleworks for simple
spreadsheets or a programmable database such as Panorama for more
complicated work.

The IT department at government department that sent me the file
responded that it was crashing because it was being used on a Mac.
Very helpful! :-S

Is there some way I can save this file on a Windows machine, or other
way, to make it compatible with the Mac. I have no idea how it has
been created. From the accompanying (Word) manual, it seems to contain
some macros and graphics.

I have translated it to Appleworks using MacLink Plus and back to
Excel. It looks ok but loses its functionality.

It's about 500kB if anyone would like a copy to play with.

Hope you can help

Peter

8. Inserting chapter markers in video file prior to creating DVD

I have a 22 GB .DV file that I am splitting in two and making two dvds
out of. The mac dvd and video editing tools are nice, but very feature
limited. The problem I am having is that when I try to import the file
into iMovie to insert chapter markers is it fails with error -40. Same
if I convert the file into .mov format. iDVD does not allow me to make a
dvd with a text menu, so I need to add some chapter markers to split
these big files up and create a text menu with another program. Any
advice on a tool that will allow me to do so? Appreciate any pointers.
