ISA Clients >> Slow Drive Access over ISA VPN

by Ben » Fri, 18 Nov 2005 22:37:47 GMT

Hi,

We've been using ISA as our VPN server for 6 months now, everything seems to
be working fine, but just recently people have been complaining of slow
drive access. Apparently it can take between 20 - 30 seconds, just to get a
directory listing of a small folder.
I used CMAK to create the client VPN connections, which specifies the
internal DNS server, and runs a logon script from the server.
Is there anything that I should check for, or anyway to speed it up?
This may just be down to more people using VPN since we have rolled it out,
if so not a lot we can do about it, (except wait for 24mb broadband). I just
want to rule out anything else that might be causing a problem.

Cheers

Ben

Hi Ben,

Only folders enumeration are slow?

Hi Sergio

Folder enumeration & opening files. For example, MS Word 2003 automatically
points to the My Documents folder, if a user is working offline or in the
office, and opens work, then goes to "File > Open" the directory listing
opens instantly. However over the VPN doing the same action hangs word for
over a minute, as it seems to be looking across the VPN link, back at the
server.
I have set slow link detection in group policy to '20480' (which should be
mob broadband speed), anything slower shouldn't sync offline files.

Cheers

Hi Ben,

Can you please dump a few "netstat -n" results while you try those slow
operations?

I have an 04 ISA STD serving vpn clients on IPSec.
When all ports are opened, I obviously have no problems accessing file

When my VPN rules are applied (shown below) I experience logon prompts for
file server access and very slow performance from file shares. Most of my
*.exe files don't populate the icon and can't seem to get all of the file
across the vpn.

4. Slow application access over VPN help!!

Hi!
I am using the Servgate line of firewalls to get my network together with
different firewalls at locations pointing to the main firewall at the office
center.
In that office I am running w2k server with an application shared on one of
the drives.
The computers outside the network access the shortcut to the shared network
folder where the application lies and access it.
For some reason if I ping the application server I get 60-80ms reply from
the server through the VPN but when I try to run the application from the
shortcut at the computer over the VPN the application takes forever to load
and to use. Everything is really slow.
I enabled NetBEUI and IPX/SPX protocol to be able to use shared resources
over my IPSec VPN.
Any suggestion on what I can do to improve the access.
The bandwidth at the center firewall is 2MB and at each outside point I have
1MB.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I have machines running the application that are 2000, others 98, etc.

Please help,
Teo

6. VPN Issue can not access shared drive

Good Afternoon,

I have an issue with my VPN setup. I inherited this, as I did not perform
the initial setup. We are using an NT 4.0 server as our VPN server. The
clients can connect to the VPN server from their homes, and everything works
fine. Everything would include:
    Mapping Drives
Reading / Writing to mapped drives
    Sync E-mail (Outlook)
    Work with outlook online
    Look at our intranet page

When the same user goes to certain hotels, then items stop working. They
can VPN in, but can not see their mapped drives, and outlook does not
function properly.

Is there some other port that I need to open, or does the issue reside with
the hotel? I have been trying to figure this out for a few days now, and
can't seem to get it resolved.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
