ISA Clients >> Mac Clients cannot access ftp

by nntp » Wed, 05 Oct 2005 19:12:43 GMT

Hello

I have a customer who has a hybrid network of both mac and pc clients.

All his pc clients are able to access ftp sites, however Mac clients are not
able to access those same ftp sites via either the web browser or stand
alone ftp clients.

The sever is a SBS 2003 with ISA 2004 on it.

Any insight would be very helpful.

Thanks

Hemang

are the PC's able to resolve the FTP hostname to an IP address? If yes, can
the Macs?

Sounds more like a DNS problem.....

Is he running the firewall client on the PC's? (There is no such thing for
Mac's). I'm thinking, maybe he has a rule allowing FTP access to certain
user groups (not "All Users") and because there is no "authentication"
taking place from the Mac's FTP transfer fails on those.

The macs can browse internet just fine.

IF it was dns, they would not be able to access those either right ?

No they are not using firewall clients on PCs.

Where do we see if any such rule exist ?

I had the same problem with internet browsing, as ISA by default only allows
authenticated traffic, but then I set the rule for any protocol from any to
any to allow.

ISA 2004 has the application filtering for ftp, which looks fine too.

No one else has run into this before ?

In the ISA Management console of course. Check all rules and see if there's
any for FTP, based on specific user groups rather than "All Users".

Hmmm... one other thought for you. Are the Mac's configured with the
internal address of ISA as their default gateway?

5. ISA2004 and FTP again (cannot access external ftp)

Sorry to create another post on ISA2004 and external FTP access. I have been
reading the other posts in this newsgroup and others for days, in factI could
quote you on most of them, yet they have not resolved my problem.
Runnings SBS Premium with ISA2004 (including SP2).
My problem is two parts.
1. Using wsftp from a client I cannot upload or download. In fact I cant
connect
2. I have a Windows based application that requires ftp through IE to
update. That also fails.

A default install of my ISA displays 18 rules plus last rule.
1. Rule 5. FTP Server Access Rule I have right clicked, configure ftp,
unchecked read only (although for extrenal access I dont belive I need this)
2. Rule 6. FTP Outbound Access Rule, I have right clicked, configure ftp,
unchecked read only.
3. Rule 18. SBS Internet Access Rule, I have right clicked, configure ftp,
unchecked read only
I have then applied all rules and I still cannot access my external ftp
sites (using wsftp)
Next I ran the CEICW wizard and tried to access ftp sites (using wsftp).
Still no change. (also can someone also clarify and I supposed to run the
CEICW wizard after making changes to my ISA firewall?)

Need help please.
I think I am close but........
Note: Prior to ISA install wsftp worked fine. No chganges made to external
router since adding ISA. Using two nics. As usual thanks in advance.

7. FTP from Mac client on SBS2003 ISA server network

Hi,

I have an SBS2003 server, windows2000 clients and Mac clients. SBS server
has 2 Nics and runs ISA. It also has a netscreen firewall which also has a
VPN channel to another office.

The problem I have is that none of the Mac clients in the main office can
access outside FTP sites to download files. (no problems now with the
Windows clients)

The other office runs server 2003 and also has a netscreen firewall. This
does NOT run ISA. The other office can access outside FTP sites to download
files no problem.

The Netscreen setup is identical both sides which leads me to believe that
the problem lies either in the multihome of the server or in the ISA config.

Any ideas on how I cure this problem??

TIA

Terry
