bcm >> Remote online access to shared BCM database

I understand that I can share a BCM database on a SBS2003 box. How can we
access it online from outside the network?
I assume OWA doesn't work for BCM. VPN is too slow and not easy to set up in
our experience. Is there another way to access the BCM database?

You can use Remote Desktop to logon to the server. Or, you can logon to
your desktop PC by going through SBS. That's what we do -- the physical BCM
database is on the SBS Server's hard drive and we logon remotely to a PC in
the office and work off it it. It then connects to the BCM db across the
LAN. We don't actually take over the server with Remote Desktop but you
could for short bursts -- better to let the server be the server.

I would look at the VPN idea again because BCM will work in an offline mode.
Once you get the VPN working, you logon from your remote and BCM will create
an offline copy of the database on the remote PC's hard drive. That way,
you can work offline and synch up when you initiate it (repeatedly during
the day or at night when things are calm... although, maybe your nights
aren't as calm as mine...).

HTH,
Lon

1. Error accessing shared BCM database on remote server

Hi All, and thanks in advance for any help you can provide,

We have a shared Business contact manager database on a remote server that
we've been able to access from 3 different PC's. The fourth PC continues to
receive the following error "Business Contact Manager for Outlook could not
complete your last action. Please try again." when it attempts to create an
offline copy.

All PC's are running WinXP Pro w/ Office 2007 SB. All are connecting to the
remote server using a Cisco VPN client. We have the stand alone Business
Contact Manager Database tool and SQL Express loaded on the server.

Thanks for any help you can provide,

2. Need to Share BCM Database - Office Online?

3. Sharing BCM fails - cannot access database

I am trying to attach to a shared BCM database. When I attempt to connect to
the share I get a message that it cannot access the database. I have shared
the database on the host and can see it from the client machine but it just
won't connect from the select a database screen. Most of the Microsoft
troubleshooting suggests a firewall problem so I turned off the firewalls on
both machines, still no joy.
The machine that is hosting the database is running Windows XP SP2 with
Outlook 2007. The client is running Vista Business with Outlook 2007. Both
machines are fully patched.
Anybody got any tips or thoughts?

Hi-
I've been trying to find some database sizing recommendations for a shared
instance of BCM. Are there any published recommendations on when it is/is
not ok to use SQL Express?

7. Can I share BCM V2 Database on 2003 by using BCM Data Admin Tool

I created a BCM database in my local machine and I would like to move it to
the server so other machines on the network can have access to it as well. I
used osql -E -S command to stop the BCM database from my machine and moved it
to the server, and I re-attached BCM database from the server.

EXEC sp_attach_db @dbname = N'STS_Config', @filename1 =
N'C:\new_database_location\STS_Config.mdf', @filename2 =
N'C:\new_database_location\STS_Config_log.ldf'

Can I have other machine attach to the Database in the server the same way?
Since I am the owner, I still have to give permission to user to access it.
But I would rather perfer to have Admin on the server have the total control
of DB. It seems MS2007 BCM Data Admin Tool is the way to go, but does it work
on the database created by BCM V2 on MS2003?

I installed the BCM Data Admin Tool + SQL 2005 Express, when I launch the
Admin Tool it did not find the BCM Instance, is there a special way to
configure that?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
