I can not get Business Contact Manager (BCM) 2007 installed. I upgraded from
Microsoft Office 2003 with Business Contact Manager to Microsoft Office 2007
Professional which includes Business Contact Manager. Before upgrading BCM
was working fine. I have installed Office 2007 and everything is working
fine. When I try to install BCM using the second CD, it will start installing
but about half way through I get an error message. Microsoft technincal
support has tried for the past 2 weeks to help me. This problem has been
escalated two times now. They say they need to reseach the problem. Has any
one had trouble installing BCM 2007?

LV, please provide more information. What exactly is the error you're
getting? Are you certain there is sufficient disk space on the target drive?
You should also look in the BCM and SQL install logs after the install
fails.

Thanks,
Chris

What is the error message? Are you installing on XP or Vista?

You can take a look at the setup log files to see the error message. There are two types of log files:1
1.) SQL Setup summary log can be found at:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Summary.txt

2.) Open your temp folder by clicking "Start | Run", then type %temp% then click OK.
Look for files named MBSsetuptmp***.log where *** represents a combination of letters and numbers.
Open each of the log files, starting with the most recently modified file, scroll to the bottom of the file, and look for the
return code.
The return code is zero if installation was successful. Otherwise, an error number will be listed.

For example, this line indicates success:
MainEngineThread is returning 0

Could you share what you find? Thanks!

Chris, thank you for repsonding so quickly. I sent you the latest error log I
received. According to Microsoft technical support the error log shows the
install is complete but the intallation failed.

I have plenty of disk space. I have 37GB of free space on my hard drive.

Mukesh, thank you for your suggestions. I looked at FAQ at your blog site.
The only suggestion to see if [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Business
Solutions eCRM] exists. It does not exist. So I don't know where to go from
here. Do you have any other suggestions?

ould you open the log file, scroll to the bottom, then look for any error
messages. There's usually a return code of 0 if setup succeeded.

The other thing to look at is the Windows Event Log. Click "Start | Run",
type eventvwr and click "OK". Now look in the Application log for errors
near the time of the failed installation. Open the error by double-clicking
on it, click the copy button and paste into a newsgroup posting.

It could be that setup failed or that the SQL Service was not started. You
can check SQL by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting "Manage". Then
expand the "Services and Applications" folder and select "Services". Now
scroll down until you see "SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ)". Check the status. Is it
running?

tried to install Business Manager for Outlook 2007 again today. About half
way through the install I received the message Setup failed to install
Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007. See C:\Documents and Setting\LV
CICM\Local Settings\Temp\MBSsetuptmp2CC.log for more detail
I also received a message etup failed to install the following products.
Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007.

When I review the message log at C:\Documents and Setting\LV CICM\Local
Settings\Temp\MBSsetuptmp2CC.log, I read the following at the bottom. It
shows the install was successful.
MSI (s) (D4:40) [12:25:51:515]: Note: 1: 1707
MSI (s) (D4:40) [12:25:51:515]: Product: Business Contact Manager for
Outlook 2007 -- Installation operation completed successfully.
MSI (s) (D4:40) [12:25:51:515]: Cleaning up uninstalled install packages, if
any exist
MSI (s) (D4:40) [12:25:51:515]: MainEngineThread is returning 0
MSI (s) (D4:54) [12:25:51:625]: Destroying RemoteAPI object.
MSI (s) (D4:F0) [12:25:51:625]: Custom Action Manager thread ending.
=== Logging stopped: 2/24/2007 12:25:51 ===
MSI (c) (38:10) [12:25:51:687]: Decrementing counter to disable shutdown. If
counte> >= 0, shutdown will be denied. Counter after decrement: -1
MSI (c) (38:10) [12:25:51:687]: MainEngineThread is returning 0
=== Verbose logging stopped: 2/24/2007 12:25:51

I also looked at C:\Documents and Setting\LV CICM\Local
Settings\Temp\MBSsetuptmp2DC.log and it says:

[2/24/2007 12:25 PM]: Cannot start service MSSQL$MSSMLBIZ on computer '.'.
[2/24/2007 12:25 PM]: BCMHooks.PostInstall() failed to start SQL Service

I looked at the Windows event log. When I looked at the application log I
did not see any errors.

Next I checked the SQL Service to see if it was running and it was not
running. When

I tried to start SQL Server I received the error message: ould not start
the SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ) service on the Local Computer. Error 3: The system
cannot find the path specified.

I tried to look for C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup
Bootstrap\LOG\Summary.txt. I do not have this file. I do not have a folder
icrosoft SQL Server

Looks like sql server failed to install.

You could try installing sql server directly, from here
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/downloads/servicepacks/sp2.mspx#ERB

It may give more detailed error messages as to why sql is not getting
installed.

If it works, try installing BCM again.

Working with Microsoft Technical Support we were able to get BCM 2007
installed. Here is what we did and it worked.

Manually removed BCM and reinstalled

Steps involved:
Uninstalled the dot new frameworks
Checked for and removed the following keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\microsoft.businesssolutions.ecrm..outlookaddin..connect.1
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-###\Software\Microsoft\Business Solutions eCRM
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\E00686AB9D6929E4082F629B86B1A536

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Business Solutions eCRM
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\Business Solutions eCRM
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{BA68600E-96D9-4E92-80F2-26B9681B5A63}

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\<INSTANCENAME>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSSQLServer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSSQL$<INSTANCENAME>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SQLServerAgent
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SQLAgent$<INSTANCENAME>

Renamed the Microsoft SQL Server folder

Rebooted

reattempted the install (it worked)
