I've got the 80 Gig of this model. It's small, quiet, and OSX recognizes
it without any fuss. The disk shows on your desktop as soon as you
connect it in and turn it on, then you can use OSX's Disk Utility to
partition/format it (you don't need the disk that comes with the drive
for that), that's all.

I've used it for a couple of months now with no problems (although I'm
told firewire devices don't have the longevity of SCSI).

The only issue I have with it, it came with a 1-foot long firewire
cable. I don't get the rational for that (it's way too short for my
setup).

7. Replacing hard drive in LaCie d2

I have an 80 GB LaCie d2 hard drive. It died. Woudn't power up. The
blue light would blink for a second and then go out.

It was out of warranty so I cracked it open. I found an ordinary 80GB
Seagate ATA/100 drive inside. I removed it and replaced it with a 40GB
ATA/100 drive I had kicking around. It now runs great!

Here's my question. I'd like to get a 160GB external drive. Since the
40GB drive works fine in the LaCie I am thinking of just buying an
internal 160GB ATA/100 drive and putting it in the LaCie. But I am
hesitant to do that because I don't know if the FireWire bridge will
work with the drive if it is that size.

Has anyone done this? LaCie won't be of any help because these drives
are not supposed to be user-serviceable and this would be unsupported.

PS I know this isn't a Mac hardware question but since LaCie drives are
so popular with Mac users I figure somebody here might be able to help.
Thanks.
