Flight Simulation Games >> How does MS Flight Sim 2002 compare to 2004?

by Acorn Tutors » Tue, 12 Aug 2003 07:42:34 GMT

Hi folks,
I was considering buying MSFS2004 but I already have 2002 and it seems fine
to me. Is 2004 that much better that I should go get it? What is a minimum
system to run it on where you can max out the details and still get a good
frame rate? The screenshots ive seen on the internet suggest that it is
somewhat better than 2002.

TIA
Doug

Frank,

When games completely hard lock your system, it tends to be an audio related
issue more than a graphics issue. You could try lowering your laptop audio
hardware acceleration (START->RUN->DXDIAG->SOUND - move slider all the way
to left) to see if this resolves your issue.

If you find that lowering hardware acceleration does fix your issue, you
might check to see if Sony has newer drivers for your sound card, or if Sony
doesn't, check the website for the chipset manufacturer. If no newer
drivers can be found, you'll need to leave your hardware acceleration
lowered or remember to lower it each time you run FS2002 and raise it again
when you're done. Lowering hardware acceleration shouldn't adversely effect
any of your other games or other media (DVDs, CDs, etc.).

Another thing to think about is - "Are you using a joystick on your laptop?"
because serial joysticks (as opposed to USB joysticks) run through the MIDI
port associated with your sound card, and this can also cause problems. If
you are using a joystick, try unplugging the joystick from your laptop and
running FS2002 with keyboard controls as a test.

Hope this helps.

Has anyone noticed that Lesson 3 (climbing and descents) appears to have a few problems? I have found that it seems to stop for no reason (i.e. the instructor just stops). Also after what I assumed was the final item in the lesson, the aircraft continued to fly for the next 30 mins without the lesson being ended until I pressed escape!!
