Get ahold of the Falcon 3.0 and/or Tornado code and update the
graphics to DX9 and WinXP/2000 compatibility. That's all. Keep the
underlyng game algorithms, data structures, and models. Just update
the graphics and computer needs. A big task, but smaller than ground
up development.

We don't need to be able to start the plane like in RL, we don't need
hyper realistic flight models or weapon models, we don't needed every
sub mode of every RADAR function or stores management function
modeled, or every possible button and switch modeled.

Just give us a fun, immersing flight sim experience (F3) and detailed
mission planning (Tornado).

Although I disagree with the delivery, I do agree in general with the
previous poster of "Screw Falcon." Why invest the $$ to develop a
sim from the ground up when you can license the Q3 engine and do a
shooter for less? The more complex the sim the more limited your
market because quite frankly, most gamers don't have or want to invest
the time to learning your DASH manual for simply starting the engines
let alone finding and engaging the enemy.

I say return to the days of fun and entertaining simulators. Give us
the illusion of fidelity without the tedium of reality. Any flight
sim developer with access to some capital I suggest you get ahold of
some old code and, if nothing else, just update it so we can easily
play it on current hardware without booting to DOS. Who would not
fork out some dough to be able to easily fly F3/OFT/Mig29/F18,
Tornado, or even LongBow, F-15SEII/SEIII, AV8B Harrier, Flanker 1.5???

There's gold in them old code, someone go mine it!

...and the cost of all this extra obsolete hardware cluttering up your
place ...priceless.

Seriously, I have several operable 486's, a Celeron 900, and another
Pentium something or other sitting around here for tinkering and extra
net access for the family not to mention the main rig. The point is
updated graphics won't run on them anyway and quite frankly, who goes
into different rooms to play different games?? The idea would be to
bring them up to snuff for current hardware so anyone could update hop
in and fly at any time.

There is probably a whole lot more to it than meets the eye.
Otherwise you'd think that someone would be rehashing some old code to
make it executable on current hardware for a quick buck or two. Not
just flight sims, but any older games.

Oh well, maybe LOMAC will turn out to be something decent. If not, I
am sure Doom 3, Half Life 2, Deus Ex 2, or Max Payen 2 will be
enjoyable money sinks.

Heh, I'd love to take credit for it. I neverheard it before either
but I'd probably ran across it somewhere in the past when the old
"realism versus fun" debates have popped up and it stuck in my head
somewhere ;}

Although on a side note .. at times I think I should take credit for
the term "eye candy." Back in '91 - '92 I knew of some people who had
a not so healthy habit that involved something referred to as "nose
candy." (seriously, not me ..not my thing and way too poor) I started
applying the term "eye candy" to over used graphics that made you feel
better but were over all worthless to the sim back in the Prodigy/BBS
days. The term started showing up a lot more after that. Then again,
a lot of people had that habit and that original term was not unique
to WV or anything. So once again the parallel development of lingo
based on the commonality of slang. Fun to think about tho......

Um, there were no sims that had eye candy back then. They *all* looked
like shit. And I disagree with your sentiments about lightweight sims
being more fun. Strike Fighters was made just for you and yet it is a
boring lifeless game.

developers putting out glossy sims *cough* Strike Fighters, Pacific
Strike *cough* that were all graphics and no depth.


I did? You consider F3 & Tornado light weight sims? What do you
consider hRrdcoR3 you L33Tdood? Seems to me F4 with all the service
patches may be hardcore. Maybe JF18. But end the end they are all
entertainment software with more inconsequential keystrokes thrown in
for you doods. Other than that grab a copy of Pilot magazine and
lookup some real training software in the back and be prepared to pay
through the nose for it (I have not looked recently) and get ready to
come in here and whine and moan about how ugly the graphics are .. if
there are any at all (as in one 727 Engineers Station sim I saw).

Wake up. 99% of what is disucussed here is entertainment software.
Talk in phonetics all you want and wear your skull cap while flying
your virtual skies. But in the end, if it isn't fun, they won't buy
it. And short of some dedicated niche programmer like TK putting out
a very narrow product on very long development cycles (where is our
second patch to Stike Fighters P1??) you'll soon not have to worry
about over analyzing each new sim that comes along because there won't
be any.

You do realize that LOMAC is going to be a "lightweight" sim, right?

This I agree with, I will make an assumption here and say that most of this
group has been weaned onto complex games like F4 with many other titles that
would by todays standards be simple. Also Flight Sims, are by thier nature
pretty sterile games meaning that there is basically only two mission types,
AA and AG so I can see another persons POV when they say they get bored
quickly. Prob the only way to fix this is a strongly scripted storyline
which would have many of us bitching about no dynamic campaign. (inc me
probably)


This I disagree with, simming is slow at the moment. How many young guys
dont like fighter planes?
It's possiable that in the quest for realism sims have got too complex and
dry for those with a passing interest or new to the genre.

Hi,

Right on the money! Flight sims is getting too complicated and too
realistic that they are no longer fun to play - more like work than
entertainment. If you want realistic then get real flight lession. I
like flight sim and still own almost every sim starting from Red Baron
3D, Longbow Gold, all DID sims, Jane's sims, Falcon 4 and the last one
was Project 1. But I only play most sim up to Jan's F15 and any thing
else after that doesn't hold my interest. I would love to like F4,
but after after couple hours wrestling with the manual and keys
combinations just to do a certain task; I boot it off the hard-drive.

Currently I'm going back to RB 3-D and JetFighter IV and having a
blast playing these semi-flight sim. Why? Because it's FUN ......

Sorry guys but I don't agree and I think you are looking back with
the rose tinted glasses on and have forgotten how far we have come!
Most of these old sims had flaws and was quite buggy, to name
a few of them I still remember...

The multiplayer in Falcon 3 was a bitch to get going and was VERY
unstable, I doubt anyone would put up with that today.

Regarding EF2000 you seem to have forgotten that the ground objects
was static? No moving ground vehicles made A-G role quite limited.

I'm not saying that this simulators was poor at the time since many
of them was the best we got back then but IMHO a remake of an old
titel without fixing problems and adding new features would be a total
failure with todays standards.

Nope. I have a friend with an pretty damn old computer and I just
recently loaded EF2000 on the computer for him. After messing around
with it for a while, I was blown away by the reminder of how far ahead of
it's time it was, and how good EF2000 would be with ONLY a graphics
update, and nothing else.

Falcon4 is a better sim, but EF2000 was a better GAME. EF2000 was more
FUN than F4. I had lots of friends who enjoyed EF2000, from novice to
hardcore. In contrast, only the hardcore liked Falcon. And every time
they add another 50 to 100 buttons in Falcon4, the audience shrinks. Yet
EF2000 appealed to the hardcore crowd because of the campaign and
simplified (but NOT simplistic) avionics that showed the whole war (air
and ground targets), without burdening you with fifty-thousand button
pushes on the radar.


I *never* said there was no bugs. They all have bugs. The more complex
the sim, the more bugs there was.


I had hell with multiplayer in F3 too. But LAN sessions with EF2000 were
a BLAST.


Limited, but still fun. If it takes 4 years to program another Falcon4,
then by God I'll deal with tanks that don't move. EF2000 was fun as
hell, even without moving tanks or ground vehicles. Just scatter the
tanks around the battlefield and let me have at um'.


With regard to EF2000 at least, I totally disagree. I don't know about
Falcon3, but EF2000 with *JUST* a graphics upgrade to current standars,
with NOTHING else, would still get up to $65 dollars (US) of MY money,
and a smile on my face.
