Hey Joe any chance of testting it out and reporting back here as I
belive there are some very big issues with the ATI 9700/9800 Pro and I
have a 9700 pro so before I buy I would like to know what these
graphic issues are, as I cant find the specifics at the AVSIM forums
as they are a mess.

I'll see what I can find. I know the AVSIM forum for MSFS2004 was just
opened yet it look like it was pages and pages long already!

The only thing I have noticed in the 20 mins I ran the program was
during the splash screens while the program was loading the screen
flickered a bit but once the actuall sim was running and I was flying
in full screen mode in a thunder storm, the fram rate was very, very
smooth. I need to look into AVSIM and see what others are saying about
the ATI card.

Well, I was able to fly a little bit more last night. The screen does
flicker when going into the menus, loading, etc. Since it doesn't do
it when flying it is not a show stopper and some people won't mind a
bit.

I had all the settings cranked up and was in 1280x1024 mode, full
screen, and everything ran smooth. Too smooth. I then realizied I had
the hardware setting set to provide 20 frames/sec. So I reduced it to
14 frames and I saw alot of new buildings and trees show up. Again in
full screen mode (no panels showing) you could see now a little bit of
a slow down but not a major problem. The bigger "problem" was the MIPs
setting (the one for 3d detail). Default is 4 and it goes from 1 to 8.
At 4, no problem. At 8, you get the dancing pixels and is crappy. I
can go to about 6. At 6 the scenery dances just a little (in the back
ground) and considering how well everything else looks I can live with
that. Above 6, forget it. I have not tried it at night yet so I can't
comment on the lights, etc and how the ATI handles them.

The engine sounds seem to be better too. I have my computer's sound
card piped into a 150 watt sound system with floor standing speakers.
I hear everything and I notice some planes seem to have alot more bass
now. The whine as you start up the 737 for example is great. I could
sit there all day just starting up all the different engines! 8-)

5. Precision Simulator + MSFS2004 Graphics Engine?

I really wish that I hadn't picked up FS9 spontaneously a few months ago,
because I had no idea that I would become so absorbed into it, spending not
only probably an unhealthy amount of time with it but also spending
left/right for commercial add-on aircraft, add-on functionality modules, CH
yoke, etc.

Prior to MSFS2004, my last "civil aircraft" simulator that I spent any
decent amount of time in was Sublogic's Flight Simulator 2.0. Yep, two
point oh -- back in 1987 on a Tandy TRS-80 Color Computer III. I, did,
however play a wide range of military flight sim games during all those
years though, such as Falcon 3.0 (excellent game back then), Aces over
Europe, Jane's USNF, Janes USNF, and more recently Falcon 4.0 a couple years
ago. (Just got back into Falcon 4.0 with all the mods for it now. IL2:FB
is also keeping me busy for military flight simming too.)

I just started the PMDG737NG recently and have become familiar with all of
it's truely great features, especially the FMC/CDU and doing SID/STAR
procedures. Now, this package is increasing my thirst for even more.

The next level, I'm assuming, would probably be Aerowinx's "Precision
Simulator"? I have no problem with it being a DOS app, if all the features
work as they are claimed to. My hesitation is, even realizing this is more
of a "cockpit simulator" than a "flight simulator", the lack of pretty
things to look at outside the window. The outside "eye candy" is still
relatively important to me.

I've seen vague mentioning that the Microsoft graphics engine could be used
to display scenery for PS? I also noted how people, who have been building
complex flight simulators, use PS but also have detailed "outside graphics"
displayed. I can't seem to find much reference for how to do this though.

I'm completetly unfamiliar with PS, but:

Q1: Is it possible to have PS running to display the instruments on one
monitor, while on other monitor having detailed "outside graphics"? Even if
this requires two computers, I'd be interested.

Q2: Down the road, I can definetly see wanting to expand even further from
there. I take it, with PS, you can use actual MFD's? PS allows you to pipe
the image for a specific instrument to an actual glass panel?

TIA!

7. MSFS2002 versus MSFS2004, much difference?

Hi folks, I have MSFS2002 and was contemplating getting 2004. Is there much
difference between them that I should go out and spend money for the extra
features?

TIA

Bill
