portable >> ASUS laptops without MicroSoft-Tax almost sold out

by Werner Heuser » Wed, 06 Oct 2004 22:32:59 GMT

Laptop and notebook manufacturer ASUS is withdrawing its
offer of mobile computers without pre-installed Microsoft
operating system (so-called). The last items are available
pre-installed with the Linux distribution of your choice
from Xtops.DE ( http://xtops.de/ ). For an international survey
of vendors which provide pre-installed Linux laptops,
notebooks and PDAs, see the TuxMobil vendor survey:

As recent as July 2004, Asus has semi-officially had an anti-Linux
attitude. According to the URL below:
http://www.mozillaquest.com/Linux04/Asus_Sucks_Story-01.html

So, do they give compatibility warranty for the systems they ship with
preinstalled Linux? Or do they just slap down any Linux distro to any
laptop they happen to sell, with no compatibility warranties and possibly
with lots of incompatible, with no or half supported components?

I would advise that a buyer should ask for Linux compatibility warranty,
and the option of returning the laptup back for a full refund should any
incompatibilities (including half supported components) be found after the
purchase. Not just for Asus, but for any Linux preinstalled laptop.
