portable >> portables and power usage

I have a thinkpad T41, it has a wireless ethernet modem (ipw2200 or
whatever). I'm not using it (the ipw2200 module is not loaded)
since all I use is the wired 1000base (e1000 module)
is the ipw2200 hardware still sucking power or is the laptop smart enough to
know it's not used and so shuts off the power to it?

I don't know about the thinkpad, but my laptop has a key combination to
turn the radio on and off. There is no LED indicator, but I can modprobe
ipw2200 and run the iwconfig command (part of wireless-tools). The output
is different when the radio is turned on or off. Once I know the radio
is off I can modprobe -r ipw2200 to clean up.

Radio on:

eth1 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"<censored>"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: <censored>
Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm
RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:84 Signal level:0 Noise level:171
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0

Radio off:

eth1 unassociated ESSID:off/any
Mode:Managed Channel=0 Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00
Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power=off

I notice a gaggle of cola goobs (Linonut, Phil Da Lick, Spamowitz, Matt) has
been clucking and scratching around the place where bbgruff left his latest

In those smelly droppings is the claim that Linux represented 7.5% of the

for the month was 7.5%.

Apparently, Linux really does make you stupid. Extremely so.
