portable >> (newbie) Infrared + Nokia 8310 phone

I have a laptop dual booting Mandrake 10.1 and Windows XP. Under
windows I am able to access the internet via GPRS through my Nokia
8310 mobile. Whenever I put the phone by the infrared port it
detects it as a standard modem and then i can dial out using
"dial-up networking", just like i would a normal landline modem.

I would like to try and do the same under Linux if possible, but
all the websites I can find are terrifyingly technical and I do
not understand a word of them... Is there any "easy" way of doing
this - any kind of program that would automate this for me or
something? Would I be any better off using another distribution
maybe??

I have installed the IrDA packages using the Mandrake Control
Centre and they are starting up succesfully when the system boots,
but I cannot get it to do anything and IrDADump does not show
anything so I presume I have not got something configured
correctly and its not "seeing" the phone.

Can anyone suggest where I need to start?!!

Many thanks in advance

it should be fairly simple. try doing (as root) :

irattach /dev/ttyS1 -s

but change the "ttyS1" for whatever is the next spare serial port on your
machine. mine has only got one serial port (it's a laptop), but yours will
probably have two. in which case, use "/dev/ttyS2", which is the third
serial port.

you'll also need some software to talk to your phone. i would recommend
gammu ( http://www.mwiacek.com/gsm/soft/gammu.html )

you can get a mandrake rpm from:

ftp://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake/10.1/i586/media/contrib/gammu-0.98.0-1mdk.i586.rpm

this is a command line only application, so you'll have to run it in an
xterm window. although there is a gui frontend for it, called "wammu":

ftp://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake/10.1/i586/media/contrib/wammu-0.8-1mdk.noarch.rpm

i haven't tried it (yet. i just downloaded the above rpm, and will try it
soon, if i can get it to install (i'm not running mandrake 10.1, i'm
running fedora core 1, so i might have trouble!)).

alternatively, there's gnokii - www.gnokii.org .

That command executes OK (with no messages), but it doesn't seem
to make it work. I've only got one serial port as well btw.

I installed the gammu rpm, and any command just returns "No
response in specified timeout. Probably phone not connected."

The annoying thing is I would be quite happy to connect it with a
cable (and I'm sure it would be far easier), but as far as I know
this phone is infra-red only (no cable available.)

if you run 'setserial -ag /dev/ttyS1' as root, you should see something
basically the same as the following:

[root@swaggie will]# setserial -ag /dev/ttyS1
/dev/ttyS1, Line 1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3
Baud_base: 115200, close_delay: 500, divisor: 0
closing_wait: 30000
Flags: spd_normal skip_test

have you got a .gammurc file in your home directory? i seem to remember
(from a previous time i used it) the gammu docs say you don't usually need
one - and i think i didn't that time, but that was with a data cable.
before i created one this time, i got the same message as you. my .gammurc
looks like this:

[gammu]
port = /dev/ttyS1
connection = irda

if you do 'cat /proc/modules', are the following modules showing up as
loaded?

irtty 7968 2 (autoclean)
irda 124080 0 (autoclean) [irtty]

what sort of phone is it by the way?

bash: setserial: command not found :(

Have done that but it doesn't seem to have made any difference. I
personally suspect the Infrared port is not working at all - I've
never used it for anything else so I have no way of telling.

Have found:
irda 119932 0 - Live 0xd8c38000
crc-ccitt 1664 1 irda, Live 0xd8bba000

I cannot find irtty though.

IMHO there is no "easy" way into Linux, or more general, into
computers. I suggest to read the Linux-InfraRed-HOWTO:

http://tuxmobil.org/howtos.html

Attention: currently the HOWTO is not up-to-date, some details
regarding Kernel 2.6 , e.g. module names have changed.

Well yes but unfortunately I don't have limitless time on my
hands, and after all it didn't take me very long at all to get it
working in Windows. I don't understand how most of Linux works to
be honest, but using a newbie-friendly distro (Mandrake) I can
still do pretty much everything on it that I can do on my Windows
system but much more reliably (Not that I particularly understand
how Windows works either, but that doesn't particularly interest
me- I just want to be able to use the thing!!!)

I'm afraid the Howto could be written in Chinese for all it means
to me.. I think I'll just have to use Windows for this until
either someone comes up with an easy way of doing it or I get a
lot more spare time...

Thanks anyway though..

Cox et al Vs Microsoft is a class action Law Suit pending in the
Supreme Court of N.Y. that is scheduled to be heard on June 11, 2006
(I'm not sure about the exact date). Actually Microsoft has made a
settlement in the case pursuant to which it will give vouchers to every
one who is a member of the class. If you bought any microsoft software
or equipment , from 1994 to 2004, that uses Microsoft software you are
a member of the class unless you ask to be excluded from the cclass.
The time to get excluded from the class is gone (you had to do it
before May 18, 2006). If you did not exckude yourself you could have
told the presiding judge why you don't like the settlement. That time
has also gone. The last day was May 18, 2006.

At the said hearing the judge will heare the settlement that has been
made and the opposition to it if any and then decide wheter the
settlement is accepted by the court or not. If the settlement is
accepted the members of the class Microsoft will issue vouchers from
$2.50 to $12 that have not excluded themselves in writing as of May 18,
2006. These members have to demand the voucher from microsoft by
sending in a form that is being distributed. That time is some day in
September of 2006.

If you have not excluded yourself you are for ever barred from Suing
Microsoft. But Microsoft is using the settlrment to for ever put Linux
out of business because the public would be compelled to useMicrosoft
Vouchers to buy Microsoft Products for a long time to come.

But there is some thing the people, who bought Microsoft Pdts from 1994
to 2004 can do. Join me in suing MIcrpsoft in a fedreal court in the
city of New York to enjoin icrosoft from proceeding with the case in
the State Supreme court. That has to be done before June 11. Microsoft
must be Enjoined to stop Microsoft.

I've no money to hire an attorney. So I'll proceed Pro Se (that is sue
Microsoft without the help of an attornry. If you want to join me in
the Law Suit, you are welcome. You do not have to contribute anything
towards the cost of Law suit unless you want to donate $100 for hiring
an attorney. If you are an attorney and would work Pro Bono, I'll
appreciate it.

The grounds of the Law Suit:

1. The composition of the Class of Members is improper and is designed
for Microsoft to profit from the law suit settlement. The members of
the class are asked to exclude themself before the the settlement is
approved by the judge and these members can't oppose the Settlement.
You must not exclude yourself if you want to oppose. the settlement.

2. If you oppose the settlement and the settlement is approved
nonetheless you have to accept the vouchers.

3. There is a maximum amount the Microsoft will pay. About $200 Million
or $250 Million. But Microsoft is not obligated to pay the maximum
amount. If the value of the vouchers asked is only $50,000,000 (fifty
Million Dollars) Microsoft gets to keep the balance of the settlement.
The more equitable arrangement would have been to devide the settlement
among the members of the class that have asked for the vouchers.

4. The settlement amount is miniscule compared to settlement made with
other parties. For example Netscape got about $6,000,000,000 (six
billion dollars) in cash. There were several other parties that got lke
settlements.

5. Microsoft is an international Company and is distributing its
product in all the Sates in USA. The law suit does not belong in a
state Court. It belongs in Fedral Court. By bringing the matter in a
state court Microsoft is breaking the class into smaller parts that
microsoft finds it easier to deal with. Microsoft must deal with the
whole class as a class if it is to to make a settlement. It can't break
the class to suite its requirement.

The attorneys have not done their duties. Their settlement motivation
is the huge fee that they stand to get if they except the proposed
settlement. The fee amounts to some $25,000,000 (25 Million Dollars).

So Microsoft must be stopped. The only way to stop is Federa Court
Intervention.

I've asked for people to email me at XXXX@XXXXX.COM . There are
millions of sons of bitches who will flood me with emails to send their
MLM proposal. I've n o interest in them. I've no interest in any money
making proposal and I ask them not to flood me with money making
proposal or any proposal through which they can make their money. If
they do I would c ourse their mothers, fathers and children and the
wobs of the women they came out of for making my life difficult. I've
given my email address solely to get support for my law suit. I hope
people would send email only to give support for my law suit against
Microsoft.
