portable, IBM? Dell?

I know I am coming in on this conversation late, and I apologize for
seeking information already given. IBM and Dell are celebrating the
holidays in a wonderful way -- they are reducing prices on their laptops.
The Dell 8600 looks great, albeit a bit large. IBM's R51 looks inviting
and is just the right size,

Is there anyone out there with experience with these products under Linux?

IBM without question. Lots of people have success with Linux on Dell, but a
lot also have some hardware problems. No one ever has problems popping the
more popular distros on IBM laptops. I run Slackware 9.1 on an ancient IBM
600e with only 128MB. Runs slow with the KDE hog, but very acceptable with
other, less resource hungry, window managers.

I'd like to get a new IBM. Where did you see the price reduction... and do
they have stock?

Google "Thinkpad" and you will come across an IBM site. Click and browse.
If you are a student, there are even more goodies for you, I think.
